Chapter 7 - The Desperate Plea

The formal dinner concluded at ten o'clock, but the real drama was just beginning in the private VIP lounge adjoining the ballroom.

Christopher and Victoria forced their way past the hotel staff, pushing through the double doors into the quiet lounge where Margaret, Patrick, Samantha, and Harrison Vance were reviewing final trust documents over tea.

"Mom!" Christopher shouted, his composure entirely gone. He burst into the room, his bowtie undone, his forehead slick with sweat. "Mom, please! We need to talk!"

Victoria rushed in right behind him, her white satin dress slightly wrinkled, her eyes wide with frantic desperation. "Mother! How could you do this to us? How could you let Patrick embarrass us in front of the entire medical board and the city council?!"

Harrison Vance immediately stood up, buttoning his jacket, but Patrick raised a hand, stopping the attorney.

"Let them speak, Mr. Vance," Patrick said calmly, taking a sip of his tea.

Christopher dropped to his knees right in front of Margaret’s armchair. He reached out to grab her hands, his face contorted in tears.

"Mom... I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know about Dad's land or the trust! If I had known—"

"If you had known I had fifty million dollars," Margaret interrupted, her voice cool and sharp as glass, "you would have let me sleep in your guest room instead of giving it to your Pilates instructor?"

Christopher choked on his words, his face turning crimson red. "No! Mom, that's not what I meant! I was stressed! I had investors coming over! Jacqueline was being difficult! I was going to call you the next day and send a limousine to pick you up!"

"You sent a check for five hundred dollars to Patrick’s apartment, Christopher," Margaret said, pulling her hands away from his grip. "You thought five hundred dollars was enough to buy off your conscience for leaving your mother on the street."

Victoria stepped forward, dropping her high-society posture entirely, tears smearing her mascara. "Mother, please! Richard’s accounting firm is facing a federal audit! If news of this scandal reaches the hospital board, they will revoke my department head position! They are already talking about ethical violations!"

"Ethics, Victoria?" Margaret looked up at her daughter. "You handed me a hundred-dollar bill through your iron gate like I was a beggar on the street. You didn't even let me inside to drink a glass of water."

"I was busy!" Victoria sobbed, reaching into her handbag and pulling out her phone. "Look, I’ll clear my schedule! I’ll book you into the finest suite at the Phoenician Resort tomorrow! I’ll take a leave of absence from the hospital to take care of you!"

"It's too late, Victoria," Margaret said softly, shaking her head. "The time to take care of your mother was when she had nothing. Patrick and Samantha didn't ask how much money was in my trunk before they pawned their wedding rings to buy my medicine."

Jacqueline, who had been standing quietly near the doorway, stepped forward, her voice high and panicked. "Mrs. Dawson... Margaret... please, talk to Christopher’s banks! His development project is short twelve million dollars! If the bank forecloses on his firm on Monday, we will lose our house! We will lose everything!"

Patrick stood up from his chair. He walked over to Christopher, looking down at his older brother with calm, unyielding strength.

"You won't lose everything, Christopher," Patrick said quietly. "You still have your health. You still have your expensive watch. And you have the lesson our mother tried to teach you forty years ago."

"Patrick, please!" Christopher begged, looking up at his younger brother—the brother he had dismissed for years as a uneducated construction worker. "You're the trustee! You can authorize a bridge loan from the trust! Just twelve million! I’ll pay it back with interest! We're brothers!"

"Brothers?" Patrick asked, a cold smile touching his lips. "When I called you two weeks ago asking for a small loan to buy Samuel’s winter coat, you told me your accountant didn't allow personal loans to extended family."

Patrick pulled a legal folder from Mr. Vance’s briefcase and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of Christopher.

"The Elena Dawson Trust does not invest in high-risk luxury real estate," Patrick declared firmly. "Your loan application is denied."
