Chapter 4: The Betrayal

The storm broke two days before the gala. Marcus Thorne had discovered my role.

I was walking to my car in the parking garage when two men in black suits blocked my path. They didn't speak. They simply grabbed me, shoving a bag over my head and dragging me into a dark sedan.

When the bag was removed, I was in a basement, tied to a chair. Marcus Thorne stood before me, his face a mask of cold, intellectual malice.

"You’re a clever girl," he said, tapping a pen against his chin. "But you’re a nobody. Ethan Carter is a man of status. He can’t marry his maid, no matter how much he thinks he loves you. I’m going to send him a video of you... 'disappearing.' And then he’s going to sign over the controlling interest of the company to save your life. He’s a sucker for sentimental attachments."

"He won't sign," I said, my voice steady despite the fear.

"He will," Thorne laughed. "Because you hold the truth about his wife. And he’ll do anything to keep that truth from coming out."

I realized then what Thorne thought. He thought the 'truth' I had was something shameful. He didn't know that the truth was just the story of a woman who had needed hope.
