Chapter 5: The Rescue

I didn't panic. I remembered the small Swiss army knife I had hidden in the hem of my skirt—a habit I’d kept since my childhood in the city.

As Thorne turned to record the video, I worked the blade against the thick zip-tie binding my wrists. It was agonizing, the plastic cutting into my skin, but I persisted. When he stepped away to take a call, I snapped the tie.

I didn't run. I reached for the heavy fire extinguisher near the exit. When Thorne turned back, I swung it with all my might, catching him in the shoulder. As he stumbled, I sprinted for the door, my heels clicking on the concrete.

I burst into the rainy alleyway, but the sedan was blocking my exit.

A sleek black car screeched around the corner, slamming into the sedan and pinning it against the wall. The door of the black car flew open, and Ethan jumped out, a look of pure, unadulterated fury on his face.

He didn't look at Thorne. He looked at me.

"Don't you ever," he growled, grabbing me and pulling me into his arms, "put yourself in that position again."

"I saved myself," I said, breathless.

Ethan looked at the sedan, then back at me. "You didn't have to."

"I did," I said. "Because I’m not just the maid. I’m the partner."
