Chapter 1 - The Collapse of the Façade

The heavy oak front doors of the Morrison estate crashed open with a booming thunder that echoed through the marble foyer.

Brendan’s laughter didn't just fade—it vanished, replaced by an awkward, defensive scowl as he stood up from the head of the dining table. Diane set her crystal wine glass down with a sharp clink, her painted eyebrows drawing together in cold annoyance.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?!" Diane demanded, her shrill voice slicing through the dining room. "This is private property! Who let you in?!"

Through the doorway marched six men clad in charcoal-grey tactical suits, led by a tall, gray-haired man in a bespoke three-piece navy suit. His posture was rigid, his expression forged from granite.

It was Arthur Vance—Executive Vice President of Legal and Chief Operating Officer of Vanguard Global Holdings, the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate that owned every subsidiary, real estate holding, and manufacturing plant the Morrison family relied upon for their lavish lifestyle.

Behind Arthur walked four private security guards bearing the silver crest of Vanguard’s executive protection detail.

Brendan froze, his face draining of color. As a senior vice president at Morrison Logistics—a subsidiary entirely owned by Vanguard—he knew Arthur Vance’s face from every annual shareholder video. Arthur was a ruthless legal titan who answered to only one person: the anonymous founder and majority shareholder of Vanguard Global.

"Mr. Vance?" Brendan stammered, stepping away from his chair, his hands trembling slightly. "Sir... what are you doing here? This is my family's private dinner."

Arthur didn't even look at Brendan. He swept past him, his polished Italian leather shoes stepping over the puddle of dirty water on the rug. He walked straight to where I sat—soaked, shivering, with water dripping from my hair onto my dress.

With absolute reverence, Arthur took off his tailored wool overcoat and gently placed it around my shoulders, wrapping me in warm cashmere.

"I am so sorry, Ma'am," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deep, respectful whisper. "Security failed to monitor your immediate perimeter. We arrived as fast as we could."

Jessica leaned across the table, her eyes wide with toxic amusement. "Brendan, who is this old man? Why is he putting his coat on your trashy ex-wife?"

Arthur slowly turned his head. His eyes locked onto Jessica with a cold, terrifying intensity that made her instantly swallow her words.

"You are currently speaking to Cassidy Vanguard-Morrison," Arthur declared in a voice that rang like a courtroom gavel across the silent dining room. "Founder, Chairman, and ninety-eight percent majority equity owner of Vanguard Global Holdings. The woman who owns the chair you are sitting in, the food you are eating, and the ground you are standing on."

The room fell dead silent.

The old espresso machine in the open kitchen hummed softly. Outside, the rain tapped against the glass.

Diane let out a harsh, nervous bark of laughter. "What nonsense is this?! Cassidy?! She’s a orphan from a farm! She came into this family with nothing! Brendan married her out of pity!"

"Your son married her because her legal trust allowed him access to a small startup loan six years ago," Arthur replied coldly, reaching into his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick, black leather folder. "A loan she personally guaranteed under a non-disclosure covenant. But as of 8:42 PM tonight, Protocol 7 has been officially executed by the Chairman."

Brendan stepped forward, his breathing erratic. "Protocol 7...? Arthur, please, tell me what that means!"

"It means total divestment, Mr. Morrison," Arthur said smoothly, opening the binder and sliding a single sheet of red-stamped paper across the glass table. "Effective thirty seconds ago, all corporate assets, personal lines of credit, luxury vehicle leases, and residential properties tied to Morrison Logistics have been frozen. As of this exact minute, you, your mother, and your subsidiary are in default of twenty-two separate covenants."

Diane’s face turned white as chalk. "Frozen?! You can't freeze my accounts! I have a gala host deposit due tomorrow!"

"You don't have an account anymore, Mrs. Morrison," I spoke up, my voice calm, level, and entirely stripped of the meekness they had spent three years beating into me.

I stood up, wrapping Arthur’s warm coat tightly around my pregnant belly. The dirty waterpooled around my feet, but I held my head high, looking down at the three of them as if they were nothing more than dust on my shoes.

"I gave you three years to show me an ounce of humanity, Brendan," I said, holding my ex-husband’s terrified gaze. "I lived in your guest room. I let your mother treat me like a maid. I listened to your new girlfriend insult my unborn child. I wanted to see if there was a single piece of a real man left inside you."

Brendan swallowed hard, stepping toward me with his hands raised. "Cassidy... sweetie... wait. This... this is a misunderstanding! My mother was just joking! It was a game!"

"A game?" I murmured, looking down at my soaked dress. "Pouring freezing water over a seven-months-pregnant woman is a game to you?"

"I'll fire the maid! I'll apologize!" Brendan begged, his voice rising into a panicked pitch. "Cassidy, please, don't do this to us! We're family!"

May you like

"We were never family, Brendan," I said, leaning closer until I could smell the expensive wine on his breath. "You were just an investment that yielded a zero return."

I turned toward the grand entrance. "Arthur. Clear the house. It belongs to Vanguard now."
