Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Light

While the Morrison family sank into the dark reality of their own making, my life transformed into a haven of peace, purpose, and preparation.
I moved into a stunning penthouse duplex overlooking Central Park—a light-filled sanctuary designed with warm oak wood, cream velvet, and vast floor-to-ceiling windows that brought the sky into every room.
My private medical team, led by Dr. Evelyn Vance (Arthur’s sister and one of the country's top obstetricians), monitored my pregnancy with gentle, meticulous care. For the first time in six years, my blood pressure was stable, my sleep was deep, and the heavy shadow of emotional abuse had fully lifted.
One quiet evening, as rain pattered softly against the terrace glass, Arthur arrived at the penthouse carrying a thick leather dossier.
I sat on the wide window seat, drinking warm chamomile tea, watching the city lights twinkle below.
"How are you feeling, Cassidy?" Arthur asked warmly, setting his briefcase on the table and taking a seat across from me.
"Better than I have in a decade, Arthur," I smiled, stroking my large, round belly. "She kicks every time I play classical music."
Arthur smiled softly, his eyes reflecting genuine grandfatherly affection. "She's going to be a force of nature, just like her mother."
He opened his dossier, pulling out several legal documents.
"I have the final updates regarding the Morrison legal proceedings," Arthur reported smoothly. "Brendan’s public defender attempted to negotiate a plea deal with the federal prosecutors today. They offered eight years in a medium-security facility in exchange for a full confession on the wire fraud charges."
"And the asset recovery?" I asked calmly.
"Morrison Logistics has been completely liquidated and rebranded under Vanguard Supply Chain Solutions," Arthur explained. "We recovered two-point-eight million dollars of the embezzled funds. The Greenwich estate has been placed on the market, and the proceeds will be placed directly into a charitable trust for single mothers in Connecticut."
I looked out at the city lights, feeling a deep, profound sense of closure wash over me.
"And Diane?" I asked softly.
"She was evicted from the Queens apartment yesterday due to non-payment," Arthur said flatly. "She is currently living in a subsidized senior residential facility in upstate New York. Her social media accounts have been permanently closed following public backlash from the news coverage."
I took a sip of my tea, feeling no malice, no anger, and no desire for further revenge. They had built their own cage out of pride, arrogance, and cruelty; life had simply closed the door on them.

"Thank you, Arthur," I said quietly. "For everything."
"You built this life, Cassidy," Arthur said, leaning back with a proud smile. "I just guarded the door."
