Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

"Adrian Mercer?" the lead marshal called out, his voice echoing cleanly across the cavernous ballroom.
The room went dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing mid-note. Thirty wealthy investors, city council members, and socialites turned in unison, staring at the federal officers as if they were ghosts.
Adrian stood frozen, his hand still hovering in the empty air where he had been gesturing to Sloane. Color completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, gray pallor. "There... there must be some mistake. I am the CEO of Mercer Urban Holdings. This is a private corporate event—"
"A private event funded by embezzled municipal development grants and fraudulent wire transfers," the magistrate interrupted, stepping forward and flipping open the legal seal. "Adrian Mercer, you are being served with a federal injunction, asset freeze, and a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice."
Gasps erupted through the crowd. Sloane Whitmore let out a sharp, choked shriek, clutching her emerald gown as if she were about to faint.
"No—this is absurd!" Adrian snarled, panic cracking his polished veneer as he pointed a trembling finger at Evelyn. "She did this! This is a malicious conspiracy by a bitter, unstable ex-wife—"
"Current wife, Adrian. We’re still legally married," Evelyn corrected softly, stepping closer to him, her voice cutting through the noise like a scalpel. "And I didn't fabricate anything. I merely opened the locked drawer you thought was safe, and handed your digital footprint to the people who know how to read it."
"You little bitch—" Adrian lunged forward, his face contorted in murderous rage, his hands reaching for Evelyn’s throat.
He didn't even make it two steps.
Dominic Vale’s arm shot out like a steel cable, grabbing Adrian by the lapel of his Brioni suit with terrifying ease. Dominic didn't raise his voice; he simply leaned in close, his eyes pitch-black and devoid of human warmth.
"Touch her," Dominic whispered, his voice carrying the chilling promise of absolute destruction, "and you won't live long enough to see the inside of a prison cell, Mercer."
The federal marshals were on Adrian instantly. Cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, wrenching his arms behind his back. The proud, untouchable CEO of Mercer Urban Holdings stumbled forward, his designer suit rumpled, his dignity completely stripped away as he was dragged across the polished hardwood floor toward the exit.
Sloane watched in horror as her protector was hauled away like a common criminal. She turned her tear-streaked, frantic face toward the remaining board members and investors, desperate for an ally. "It wasn't me! I just put my name on what he gave me! I didn't know—"
"Save it for the federal prosecutor, Ms. Whitmore," Marcus Vance announced, stepping out from behind the marshals with a thick manila folder in hand. "Our copyright infringement suit includes joint liability for intellectual property theft and fraudulent representation. Your Parsons degree won't look nearly as pretty in a federal penitentiary jumpsuit."

Sloane collapsed onto a velvet banquette, sobbing hysterically as flashbulbs from paparazzi outside—tipped off by an anonymous source—began flashing furiously through the glass windows.
Evelyn stood amidst the chaos, her expression serene, her breath even. The nightmare was over. The cage was broken.
