Chapter 5 - Shadows and Sanctuary

Two hours later, the Yacht Club ballroom was entirely empty, save for the catering staff clearing away broken glass and overturned chairs.
Evelyn stood out on the private seaside terrace, the cool ocean breeze catching the silk of her midnight-blue gown. The roar of the city felt distant out here, muffled by the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the concrete pilings.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her.
"A magnificent performance, Ms. Hart," Dominic Vale said, leaning against the wrought-iron railing a few feet away. He handed her a fresh glass of sparkling water, his dark eyes studying her profile. "Though I suspect it wasn't a performance at all. You planned every single move from the moment you hit that floor."
Evelyn took the glass, her fingers brushing his. "When someone tries to erase you, Dominic, you have two choices: you can fade into the background, or you can pick up the pen and rewrite the entire story."
"You chose the latter," Dominic noted with a faint, appreciative smile. "And now? Mercer Urban Holdings is liquidating its assets under federal receivership. Sloane Whitmore is facing five to ten years for conspiracy and fraud. Adrian is looking at a federal penitentiary where custom suits aren't permitted. What happens to the Mercer Renewal brand?"
Evelyn turned to face him, her chin held high. "It reverts back to its true creator. The municipal grants are being restructured under a legitimate community trust managed by women from Ohio and San Diego who actually know how to sew, create, and build. I’m taking my work back."
Dominic chuckled, a rich, genuine sound. "I had a feeling you would say that. Which brings me to a proposition."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "I thought you only dealt in hotels, shipping terminals, and underworld real estate, Mr. Vale."
"I deal in power, Evelyn. And people who possess true strength," Dominic said, turning fully toward her, his gaze intense and unblinking. "My holdings include high-end retail spaces along the Gulf Coast and international shipping lanes that currently lack a visionary creative director—someone who understands how to build something of lasting value from raw materials. I’m offering you a partnership. Complete financial backing, total creative freedom, and absolute protection."
Evelyn looked into his dark, unfathomable eyes. She saw danger, yes—but she also saw respect. She saw an equal.
"Protection from what, Dominic?" she asked softly.
"From anyone who ever thinks they can push you down a staircase again," he replied without missing a beat.
Evelyn held his gaze for a long, charged moment. Then, slowly, a genuine, radiant smile touched her lips—the first real smile she had worn in years.
She extended her hand.

"When do we start, Dominic?"
Dominic firmly grasped her hand, his grip warm, steady, and unbreakable. "The midnight flight to New Orleans is waiting whenever you are, partner."
