Chapter 9 - The Paris Exhibition

Six months later, the Grand Palais in Paris buzzed with the frantic, electric energy of Paris Fashion Week. The world’s elite fashion editors, international buyers, celebrities, and art patrons filled the velvet-draped amphitheater, waiting for the most anticipated runway debut of the decade.
The lights dimmed. A hush fell over the thousands in attendance.
Electronic, atmospheric music began to pulse through the massive state-of-the-art sound system.
The runway illuminated with a brilliant, golden glow.
The first model emerged, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown with architectural lines that caught the light like running water. As she turned at the end of the runway, the intricate silver embroidery along the hem caught the spotlight, spelling out the subtle, beautiful monogram that honored a legacy born in a small apartment in Cleveland: Hart.
Collection after collection followed—tweed jackets lined with sustainable hemp, evening wear that combined severe modern luxury with timeless grace, and structured power suits designed for women who commanded rooms without raising their voices.
Backstage, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of activity. Dressers adjusted seams, models checked their makeup in illuminated mirrors, and senior tailors beamed with pride.
Evelyn Hart stood near the main backstage monitor, wearing a sleek, tailored black blazer and trousers of her own design. Her hair was pulled back perfectly, her dark eyes reflecting the glowing screens displaying the runway cameras. She wasn't shaking. She wasn't hiding. She was completely, effortlessly in her element.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, resting comfortably as a low, warm voice spoke softly near her ear.
"They love you," Dominic murmured, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. He looked immaculate in a custom black tuxedo, looking out at the roaring applause echoing from the main hall. "The critics are already calling it the rebirth of modern haute couture."
Evelyn leaned back against him, letting out a contented breath. "They love the work, Dominic. Because the work is honest. Every stitch has a purpose."
"And the woman behind it?" Dominic asked softly, turning her gently so she faced him, his dark eyes filled with an intensity and devotion that belonged to her alone.
Evelyn smiled, reaching up to adjust the lapel of his jacket with familiar, practiced ease. "She’s finally home."
At that exact moment, the final buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the show. The entire auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation, hundreds of people rising to their feet to applaud the visionary behind the collection.
Dominic offered her his hand—not a hand of rescue or obligation, but an equal partnership forged in fire and survival.

Evelyn took it without a second thought.
Together, hand in hand, they stepped out from behind the velvet backstage curtains into the blinding, brilliant white light of the runway, walking forward into a future where no one would ever dare try to push her down again.
