Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over Lombardy

By three o'clock in the morning, Villa Moretti was converted into an active war room.

The second-floor library was lit by bright overhead fluorescent lights, casting harsh shadows across tactical maps of Milan, maritime route charts, and security camera feeds displayed across eight massive monitors.

I stood near the door, holding a sleeping Emma wrapped in her cashmere blanket, refusing to leave Alessandro’s sight after Marco’s news.

Alessandro sat at the head of the long oak table, surrounded by his six highest-ranking lieutenants.

"Sal Moretti took the north expressway toward Lake Como," Marco reported, pointing his laser pointer at a glowing red map line. "We found his abandoned vehicle near the border checkpoint at Chiasso. He crossed into Switzerland on foot."

"He didn't act alone," Don Ricci growled, leaning heavily on his cane near the hearth. "To poison a prisoner in the central vault requires security clearance codes that only three people in this house possess."

Alessandro lifted his head slowly. His dark eyes scanned his remaining lieutenants one by one.

"Who possessed the cellar override keys tonight?" Alessandro asked softly.

Silence fell over the room.

Finally, Sal’s younger brother, Luca Moretti—a thirty-year-old tactical commander who managed the estate’s outer perimeter—stepped forward, his hands trembling slightly.

"Alessandro... I gave Sal my key card at midnight," Luca stammered, his face white with terror. "He said you ordered a secondary interrogation before the morning council! I swear to God, I didn't know he was working for Lorenzo Rossi!"

Alessandro stood up slowly.

"You gave away vault security without my direct voice verification, Luca?" Alessandro murmured, taking two steps toward his cousin.

"He’s my brother!" Luca wept, dropping to his knees. "I trusted him!"

Alessandro looked down at Luca for three agonized seconds. Family blood was sacred in the Moretti empire, but treason was a poison that destroyed everything it touched.

"Marco," Alessandro commanded quietly. "Strip Luca of his rank. Confine him to the guard house until the war is over. If he moves an inch without permission, shoot him."

"Yes, Boss," Marco said, motioning two guards to haul Luca away.

Alessandro turned back to the remaining lieutenants.

"Lorenzo Rossi is gathering his forces at the old textile mill near the Navigli canal," Alessandro announced, his voice hard as iron. "He thinks he has crippled my internal command. He thinks I am distracted by the Commission dinner."

He stepped up to the head of the table, his eyes locking onto mine across the room.

"We strike at dawn," Alessandro declared. "Every soldier, every gun, every asset we have in northern Italy will move on the Navigli district. We cut the head off the snake before sunset."

"Alessandro!" I called out, taking three steps forward despite the terrifying presence of the armed men in the room.

Every lieutenant turned to look at me, shocked by a former housekeeper interrupting a war council.

Alessandro raised his hand, halting his men immediately. "Speak, Clara."

"It’s a trap," I said, my voice clear and steady despite the trembling in my knees.

Don Ricci frowned deeply. "What are you talking about, girl? You clean floors, you don't plan tactical assaults."

"Listen to me!" I insisted, stepping closer to the table, holding Emma tightly. "I lived in the Navigli district for two years after my husband died! I know every inch of those canals! The old textile mill was purchased by a Swiss investment firm six months ago—I know because I cleaned the real estate office on Tuesdays!"

Alessandro narrowed his eyes, stepping closer to me. "Go on, Clara."

"The Swiss firm that bought the mill is owned by the Romano family!" I explained, my eyes bright with sudden, terrifying clarity. "Matteo Romano didn't act alone! Vivian wasn't just his sister—she was the financial director of that firm!"

A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the room once more.

Alessandro’s face hardened. He turned to Marco. "Pull the real estate registry for the Navigli mill. Right now."

Marco typed furiously into his laptop. Ten seconds later, a red document appeared on the main screen.

OWNER: ROMANO HOLDINGS S.A. — DIRECTOR: VIVIAN ROMANO.

"God above," Don Ricci whispered, taking a step back. "If we had sent our strike force into that mill at dawn..."

"It was lined with explosives," Alessandro realized, his voice dropping into an abyss of ice. "They wanted me to breach the building with my main force so they could detonate the site and wipe out the Moretti leadership in one stroke."

Alessandro looked at me.

In front of all his hardened lieutenants, the cold King of Milan reached out, taking my hand in his, bowing his head in profound respect.

"You just saved my life again, Clara," Alessandro whispered, his breath warm against my fingers.

"I told you," I murmured softly, a small, weary smile touching my lips. "I know how to spot dirt where others see clean marble."

Alessandro turned back to his men, his eyes ablaze with apocalyptic fury.

"Change of plans," Alessandro commanded, his voice shaking the heavy chandelier above. "We don't go to Navigli. We go to the Romano estate in Bellagio."

He looked at Marco.

"Bring Vivian out of her cell," Alessandro ordered. "It’s time she faced her judgment."
