Chapter 6 - The Snake Unmasked

The battle inside the Romano villa lasted less than twelve minutes.

The overwhelming tactical force of the Moretti strike team, combined with the total element of surprise, crushed Lorenzo Rossi’s shadow mercenaries before they could assemble a defensive line.

Through the rain-streaked window of the SUV, I saw four Moretti guards dragging three surviving mercenaries out into the courtyard, disarming them, and forcing them onto their knees in the mud.

Then, the heavy front double doors of the mansion were thrown open.

Alessandro emerged onto the wide stone terrace, his suit jacket damp with rain, a blood stain visible on his white shirt cuff, holding a tall, gray-haired man by the collar of his leather coat.

Lorenzo Rossi.

The legendary ghost of Lombardy—the man who had terrorized northern Italy for five years—was dragged down the marble steps like a common street thief.

Marco opened the door of our SUV. "It's clear, Clara. Boss wants you inside."

I picked up Emma, holding her tightly against my hip, and stepped out into the cool rain, protected under Marco’s large umbrella as we walked across the wet stone courtyard toward the terrace.

Lorenzo Rossi was pinned to the wet stone floor by two heavy guards. His face was bruised, his expensive gray hair soaked with rain, but his eyes were filled with pure, chaotic madness.

Beside him, Vivian sat huddled on a stone bench, weeping uncontrollably as Moretti soldiers placed steel cuffs on her wrists.

Alessandro stood over Lorenzo, his weapon lowered at his side. When he saw me approach with Emma, he turned slightly, stepping in front of us to ensure Lorenzo could not make a sudden move.

Lorenzo lifted his bleeding head, his dark eyes locking onto Emma holding her blue rabbit.

A dark, bitter laugh escaped Lorenzo’s throat. "A maid’s child..." Lorenzo wheezed, spit and blood splashing onto the stone. "Five years of planning... forty million dollars in offshore assets... three families under my thumb... and my entire network gets brought down because a three-year-old child kept a toy ear turned inside out."

Alessandro stepped on Lorenzo’s chest, leaning down until his shadow completely covered the fallen traitor.

"You didn't get brought down by a toy, Lorenzo," Alessandro said, his voice flat, cold, and terrifyingly clear. "You got brought down because you underestimated the strength of the people in my house."

Lorenzo sneered, looking past Alessandro to me. "She’s a housekeeper, Moretti! She cleaned my summer villa in Lake Como three years ago! She’s a nobody!"

I stepped forward.

I looked down at the man who had ordered my life destroyed, the man who had tried to turn my innocent baby into a target.

"I am not a nobody, Mr. Rossi," I said, my voice steady and strong, echoing through the wet courtyard. "I am Clara Bennett. And the hands you call 'only a housekeeper's' are the hands that just rebuilt Milan."

Alessandro looked back at me, a look of unadulterated admiration shining in his blue eyes.

He looked back down at Lorenzo.

"Marco," Alessandro commanded. "Take Lorenzo and Vivian to the federal authorities in Rome. Hand over every transcript, every ledger, and every wire code."

Lorenzo blinked, stunned. "Rome?! You're handing me to the government?! You're a mafia boss, Moretti! You're supposed to kill me!"

Alessandro let out a long, cool breath through his nose.

"Killing you in a cellar keeps the war alive, Lorenzo," Alessandro said smoothly. "Handing you to the anti-mafia tribunal strips your family of every cent, every asset, and every name you ever owned. You will spend the next forty years dying slowly in a six-by-six concrete box."

He motioned his guards. "Get them out of my sight."

Lorenzo Rossi shrieked and cursed as he was dragged away into the back of an armored police transport vehicle, his shadow empire vanishing into the gray morning mist forever.
