Chapter 2 - The Backlash

By noon, the business world of Chicago was buzzing with rumors.
Richard sat in his corner office on the 40th floor of the Blackwood Tower, staring at a stack of documents detailing his personal and corporate accounts. Opposite him sat Julian Myers, his chief operating officer, looking pale and agitated.
"Richard, Marcus Vance just pulled his fifty-million-dollar commitment," Julian said, pacing across the plush rug. "He said if you're too unstable to make a 7:00 AM meeting, you're too unstable to handle his money. And that's not all. Cassandra’s publicist leaked a statement to the Chicago Tribune hinting that you're unfit as a father and that she left you due to 'erratic behavior.'"
Richard didn't look up from his papers. "Let Marcus pull his money. We don't need his capital to clear the third-quarter benchmarks."
"We do need it if we want to complete the acquisition of Sterling Logistics!" Julian countered, slamming a hand on the table. "What is happening to you? Four years you worked to build this firm into an unstoppable force! Now, overnight, you're cutting off your social network, alienating our biggest investors, and letting a bitter ex-fiancée drag your reputation through the dirt!"
Richard finally raised his head. His dark eyes locked onto Julian with an intensity that made the executive freeze.
"Julian," Richard said quietly. "For four years, while I was building this 'unstoppable force,' my son was eating bread scraped with coffee grounds out of my kitchen trash because the woman I brought into my house was systematically abusing him."
Julian stopped pacing. His breath caught in his throat. "What?"
"I was so busy securing fifty-million-dollar checks from men like Marcus Vance that I didn't notice my eight-year-old child was terrified of asking for a sandwich," Richard continued, his voice trembling with controlled fury. "So listen to me very carefully. I do not give a damn about Sterling Logistics. I do not give a damn about Marcus Vance. And if the Chicago Tribune wants to print Cassandra’s lies, let them. If any partner in this firm feels my focus on my son compromises their investments, they can draw down their capital by 5:00 PM today. I will buy out every single one of them myself."
Julian swallowed hard, the anger draining out of him, replaced by a profound sense of shock. "Richard... I had no idea. I thought... she seemed so devoted to the family at the galas."
"She was devoted to the performance," Richard said coldly. "And I was her biggest fan because it allowed me to work eighty hours a week without feeling guilty. That ends today."
At 2:30 PM, Richard packed his leather briefcase, locked his office door, and walked past a stunned floor of analysts. For the first time in his fifteen-year career at the helm of Blackwood Capital, the CEO left the building before 3:00 PM.
When he arrived at St. Jude’s, he saw a black SUV parked across the street from the pickup line.
Richard’s eyes narrowed. He parked his car, stepped out, and walked directly toward the vehicle. As he approached, the tinted window rolled down, revealing Cassandra. She was wearing massive sunglasses, her designer scarf wrapped tightly around her neck, her face set in a mask of pristine rage.
"What are you doing here, Cassandra?" Richard demanded, leaning against the door frame.
"I came to get my things from the house, but your thugs wouldn't let me past the gate," she snapped, her voice dripping with venom. "Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was to have my credit cards declined at the Drake, Richard? My lawyer is already drafting a suit for wrongful termination of cohabitation and emotional distress!"
"You have ten minutes to clear your mind before the police arrive," Richard said calmly. "I’ve already filed a report detailing the emotional abuse and physical neglect of a minor. The moment you step near Ethan or my property, you will be arrested for child endangerment."
Cassandra sneered, dropping her sunglasses to reveal cold, calculated eyes. "Child endangerment? Good luck proving that in court! I gave that brat structure! He was a whiny, unsophisticated mess when I met you. I taught him how to behave! If I didn't feed him three courses every night, it was because he needed to learn discipline!"
Richard’s fist clenched so tightly his nails bit into his skin, but he maintained absolute control. "You didn't give him discipline. You tortured a defenseless child because you wanted complete dominance over this family. You saw him as a rival for my money and attention."
"He is a drain!" she spat out. "And you think you can do this alone? You’re a businessman, Richard! You don't know the first thing about raising a kid! In six weeks, you’ll be begging me to come back to manage your chaotic life!"
"I would rather lose every cent I possess and live in a studio apartment than ever let you near my son again," Richard said softly.
He turned his back on her and walked toward the school gate just as the bell rang.
Ethan emerged from the double doors, carrying a heavy backpack. When he saw Richard standing there—not a chauffeur, not Cassandra, but his father—his steps quickened. He ran down the stone steps and stopped a foot away from Richard, searching his face.
"Did... did she come back?" Ethan asked softly, glancing toward the line of cars.
Richard knelt down, ignoring the gaze of other parents who were watching the scene unfold. He took Ethan’s backpack and swung it over his own shoulder.
"She's gone, Ethan. She's never coming back into our house. I promise you."

Ethan let out a long breath—a breath it felt like he had been holding for four years. Without a word, he stepped forward and wrapped his small arms around Richard's neck.
Richard closed his eyes, pulling his son close, holding him tightly against the winter wind, swearing a silent oath to protect this boy with everything he had left in his soul.
