Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Six months passed.

The transformation of the Blackwood household was complete. The cold, sterile, five-million-dollar mansion had finally become a genuine home.

The immaculate white walls were now decorated with Ethan’s artwork. The pristine kitchen featured a large wooden table that Richard had personally built in the garage with Ethan over three weekends—it was slightly uneven and bore the marks of amateur carpentry, but it was the most valuable piece of furniture in the house.

Richard had restructured his role at Blackwood Capital. He promoted Julian Myers to Co-CEO, handing over the daily operational control of the firm while Richard focused purely on long-term strategy and high-level client acquisitions.

His workweek was cut from eighty hours to thirty. He never missed a school play, never missed a soccer practice, and was always in the kitchen at 6:30 AM to make breakfast—and his pancake recipe was now flawless.

One evening, Richard decided to host a dinner at his home.

It wasn't a formal gala for donors or corporate titans. There were no caterers in black ties, no expensive champagne, and no curated guest lists designed to impress journalists.

The guests were Mrs. Wilson—the school cafeteria supervisor who had shown Ethan kindness when no one else did—along with her husband, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, and Julian Myers.

Richard spent the entire afternoon in the kitchen with Ethan, preparing a homemade roast chicken, vegetables, and a massive chocolate cake.

When the guests arrived, the house was filled with the rich aroma of cooking food and the sound of warm laughter.

They all sat around the handmade wooden table. Mrs. Wilson sat next to Ethan, who proudly showed her a trophy he had won at school for his science project.

"I hear you're the top student in your science class now, Ethan," Mrs. Wilson said, winking at him.

"Dad helped me build a solar-powered motor!" Ethan said proudly, mouth full of roasted potatoes.

"Ethan, chew your food first, buddy," Richard reminded him with a soft chuckle, pouring water for Mrs. Wilson.

Mrs. Wilson looked around the table, watching Richard serve his guests with genuine humility and joy. She remembered the cold, distant billionaire who had walked into her cafeteria six months ago, and marvelled at the man standing before her now.

During dessert, Julian raised his glass of sparkling water.

"I’d like to make a toast," Julian said, looking at Richard. "Six months ago, I thought Richard was making the biggest mistake of his life by walking away from the desk. I thought our firm would crumble. But standing here tonight, seeing this home, and seeing Ethan... I realize that Richard didn't lose his mind. He found it. To Richard and Ethan."

"To Richard and Ethan!" the guests toasted, clinking their glasses together.

Ethan looked up at his father, his eyes shining with pride and love. He reached under the table and squeezed Richard’s hand.

Richard held his son’s hand tightly, feeling a deep, unbreakable warmth settling into his soul.
