Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The court-appointed social worker, a stern woman in her late fifties named Dr. Margaret Hollis, arrived at the Lincoln Park home at precisely 6:00 PM on Friday.
She carried a thick leather clipboard and wore an expression of total detachment—the face of a woman who had seen every trick wealthy parents used to conceal neglect.
Richard met her at the door, wearing a simple wool sweater and dark trousers—no suit, no corporate armor.
"Dr. Hollis," Richard said politely, extending his hand. "Thank you for coming. Please, come in."
Dr. Hollis stepped into the foyer. She glanced around the expansive entry, noting the lack of luxury clutter. "Mr. Blackwood. I'll be blunt. I’m here to determine if this environment is suitable for Ethan's emotional and physical well-being. I’ve reviewed the allegations made by Ms. Vale."
"I invite you to inspect every square inch of this house," Richard replied calmly. "And speak to my son without my presence if you wish."
Dr. Hollis raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised by his lack of defensiveness. "I will certainly do that."
She spent the first forty-five minutes inspecting the house. She walked into the kitchen, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw the pantry. The doors were gone; the shelves were completely open, brimming with healthy food, fresh fruits, and accessible snacks.
She made a quick notation on her clipboard. "Unusual kitchen layout for a home of this value, Mr. Blackwood."
"My son was forced to eat from the garbage because the pantry was locked by the woman who filed those false affidavits," Richard said directly. "The doors were removed so Ethan knows food is never withheld from him again."
Dr. Hollis stared at Richard, her sharp eyes searching his face. She didn't comment, but wrote another note.
Next, they moved upstairs to Ethan’s room. Ethan was sitting at his desk, working on a science project about the solar system. When Dr. Hollis stepped in, the boy looked up nervously, his eyes automatically darting to his father.
"Ethan," Richard said gently, leaning against the doorframe. "This is Dr. Hollis. She's a lady who helps families. I’m going to step down to the study while you two talk, okay?"
Ethan looked frightened for a second, but Richard gave him a warm, reassuring nod. "You don't have to be afraid. Just tell her the complete truth. About everything."
Richard walked downstairs, leaving the door open.
For forty minutes, Richard sat in his study, staring at his hands, his heart hammering against his ribs. Every instinct commanded him to go up those stairs, to protect his child, to control the interview. But he forced himself to sit still.
Suddenly, the front doorbell rang.
Richard frowned and walked to the front door. When he opened it, he found Cassandra standing on the porch, flanked by her attorney, Harold Sterling—a slick, sun-tanned lawyer with an arrogant smirk.
"What are you doing here?" Richard said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.
"We have every right to be present during a court-mandated welfare check, Mr. Blackwood," Harold Sterling declared loudly, making sure his voice carried into the home. "Ms. Vale is a key witness to the living conditions in this house, and we are here to ensure the evaluator receives an accurate picture of the situation."
Cassandra stepped past Richard into the foyer, looking around with a triumphant smile. "Oh, look at this place. No staff, no order. You've completely ruined the aesthetic, Richard."
"Get out of my house," Richard said, stepping directly in front of her, his tall frame looming over them.
"If you attempt to forcibly remove us, Mr. Blackwood, I will call the police immediately and have you arrested for assault in front of the court evaluator," Sterling warned, pulling out his phone. "That won't look very good for your custody battle, will it?"
At that exact moment, Dr. Hollis and Ethan walked out of the upstairs bedroom and stood at the top of the grand staircase.
When Ethan saw Cassandra standing in the entry hall, his entire body went rigid. The color drained from his face. He backed away until his shoulders hit the wall, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.
Cassandra looked up, instantly putting on a sweet, maternal expression that made Richard’s stomach churn.
"Oh, Ethan, darling!" Cassandra called out, her voice dripping with fake affection. "Don't be afraid! Mommy Cassandra is here! I came to make sure you're being taken care of!"
Ethan began to hyperventilate, clutching his stomach as if he were physically ill.
"Look at him!" Sterling shouted, pointing dramatically toward the staircase. "The child is terrified! He's experiencing extreme emotional distress under Mr. Blackwood's care! Dr. Hollis, you are witnessing a complete psychiatric collapse!"
Richard didn't care about the legal trap. He didn't care about Sterling's phone, the court order, or the social worker’s report.
In two quick strides, Richard closed the distance between himself and Sterling. He grabbed the lawyer by his expensive silk lapels, slammed him against the heavy oak front door, and looked into his eyes with a terrifying, unhinged rage.
"If you speak another word to my son," Richard growled, his voice vibrating with absolute menace, "I will destroy you. Not legally. Not financially. I will personally throw you down these front steps."
Sterling’s eyes went wide with genuine fear. He choked on his breath, speechless.
Richard turned his gaze to Cassandra. "Get out."
"Richard, you're crazy!" Cassandra shrieked, backing toward the open door. "Dr. Hollis! Look at him! He's violent!"
Dr. Hollis walked down the stairs slowly, her face entirely devoid of emotion. She walked right past Cassandra and Sterling, walked to the front door, and opened it wide.
"Ms. Vale, Mr. Sterling," Dr. Hollis said in a flat, icy tone. "I did not invite you to this evaluation. You have deliberately entered this residence and triggered a severe psychological terror response in an eight-year-old child who was, until your arrival, calm, coherent, and comfortable."
Cassandra blinked, caught completely off guard. "What? No! He's scared of him!"
"I have been evaluating children for thirty years, Ms. Vale," Dr. Hollis said, stepping between Cassandra and the stairs. "I know the difference between a child who fears his father and a child who is terrified of his abuser. Leave this property immediately, or I will personally contact the presiding family court judge and have you cited for contempt and harassment."
Sterling didn't wait for a second warning. He straightened his ruined tie, grabbed Cassandra by the arm, and practically dragged her out into the winter rain.
Richard closed the heavy oak door, locking it with a sharp click.
He leaned his back against the wood, taking deep, shuddering breaths, trying to pull his composure back together.
When he looked up, Dr. Hollis was standing in front of him.
"You broke protocol, Mr. Blackwood," she said quietly. "Laying hands on an attorney during an evaluation is grounds for a negative report."
Richard looked at her, his eyes raw with emotion. "I don't care about protocol. I will protect my son from that woman with my life. If that makes me unfit in the eyes of the court, then the system is broken."
Dr. Hollis looked at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, the corners of her mouth softened into a faint, approving smile.
"I’ve spent thirty years watching rich parents hire lawyers to fight for custody like they're splitting real estate assets," she said softly. "You’re the first billionaire I’ve seen who was ready to go to prison just to keep a predator away from his boy."
May you like
She opened her clipboard, checked a final box, and closed it with a sharp snap.
"My report to the judge will recommend total sole legal and physical custody for you, Mr. Blackwood. And a permanent restraining order against Ms. Vale."
