Chapter 7 – The Motel With No Name in Records

The room smelled like old heating coils and disinfectant that never fully worked.

Rebecca sat on the edge of the motel bed, laptop balanced on her knees, the glow of the screen carving her face out of the dark.

Behind her, the children finally slept.

That was the only thing keeping her anchored to reality.

Grace had curled into a tight ball like she was trying to disappear into herself. Ethan’s breathing was uneven, still carrying the residue of fear. Lily, though, hadn’t moved for almost twenty minutes. Awake even in sleep, like her body didn’t trust rest anymore.

Rebecca stared at the blinking cursor.

Phase One: Extraction.

The words felt too small for what she was trying to survive.

Her phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

She didn’t answer.

It vibrated again.

And again.

Then a message came through anyway:

“You can’t disappear with my children.”

Her fingers froze.

Not because of fear.

Because of recognition.

Grant.

Of course he would frame it like ownership.

Like the children were property misplaced during a transaction.

Rebecca closed her eyes slowly.

Then opened them again.

She typed one line:

“They were never yours to control.”

She didn’t send it.

Not yet.

Instead, she shut the laptop.

Not because she was done.

Because she had just realized something important:

He already knew she had run.

Which meant this wasn’t escape anymore.

It was timing.

And he was already behind her.
