Chapter 8 – The First Hidden Asset

At 2:18 AM, Rebecca woke without remembering falling asleep.
Her body had learned that kind of vigilance long before this night.
The children were still asleep.
But something had changed.
The room felt… watched.
She sat up slowly.
The curtains moved slightly.
Not from wind.
From pressure outside.
Rebecca didn’t move for a full ten seconds.
Then she stood.
Quietly.
Barefoot on the cold floor.
She walked to the window and pulled the curtain just a fraction.
A black SUV sat at the far end of the parking lot.
Engine off.
Lights off.
But not abandoned.
Waiting.
Rebecca stepped back.
Her pulse didn’t spike.
It stabilized.
That was the most dangerous part of her now—she didn’t panic the way she used to.
She calculated.
She opened her laptop again.
Typed quickly into a hidden folder labeled:
GRANDMOTHER ARCHIVE
Inside were documents she hadn’t touched in years.
Old bank routing numbers.
A trust structure she barely understood at the time of inheritance.
And one encrypted note from her grandmother:
“If you ever need to vanish, do not use what they know you have.”
Rebecca’s fingers paused.
She opened the trust file.
And saw something she had never noticed before.
A secondary beneficiary structure.
Not linked to Grant.
Not linked to her parents.
A shell account buried inside a medical research foundation.
Rebecca whispered to herself:
“What did you leave me…?”
Outside, the SUV engine turned on.
May you like
Not leaving.
Circling.
