Chapter 9 – Grant Starts Hunting

In a high-rise office in Cincinnati, Grant Donovan stared at three screens.
Bank records.
Cell tower pings.
Social media gaps.
And one blank space that shouldn’t exist.
“She wiped herself clean,” his attorney said carefully.
Grant didn’t look up.
“No,” he replied. “She thinks she did.”
He leaned back slowly.
Rebecca had always been emotional.
Predictable.
But this version—
This version was different.
“She took the kids,” he said.
“Yes.”
“And left no legal trace?”
“Only temporary transactions. Motel-level spending. Nothing stable.”
Grant smiled slightly.
That wasn’t relief.
It was patience.
“She used fear money,” he said.
The attorney frowned. “Fear money?”
“Cash you spend when you think you’re running from danger,” Grant said. “It always runs out the same way.”
He stood.
“Find her grandmother’s connections,” he said.
“That inheritance was sealed.”
Grant finally looked up.
“Everything unseals if you pressure it correctly.”
A pause.
