Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Protection

By the next morning, the storm had cleared, leaving Chicago glistening under a pale winter sun. But the world around our small diner had changed completely.
When I arrived at the diner after school, I noticed two dark sedans parked across the street. They didn't have taxi signs or delivery logos. Inside sat quiet men in charcoal suits, reading newspapers and sipping coffee.
"They've been there since sunrise, Maya," Grandma Rose whispered, peeking through the blinds as she wiped down the counter. "I tried to offer them fresh pastries, but they politely declined, saying Mr. Volkov instructed them to guard the perimeter."
"Guard us?" I asked, setting my heavy backpack on a stool. "From what?"
"In this city, child, when a powerful man claims you, his enemies take notice," Rose said, her eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and anxiety.
She wasn't wrong.
For three years, our diner had been struggling under the crushing weight of unpaid property taxes and predatory loans enforced by a local extortion ring known as the Northside Crew—a ruthless gang led by a man named Victor Vance. Victor had been threatening to burn down our diner if Grandma didn't hand over sixty percent of her weekly earnings.
At 4:00 PM, the diner bell chimed.
It wasn't a customer. It was Victor Vance himself, accompanied by two heavy-set men wearing leather jackets. Victor pushed open the door with a sneer, tossing a manila envelope onto the counter.
"Time's up, old woman," Victor barked, ignoring me completely. "The interest on your lease doubled this month. Pay up, or my boys start breaking tables."
Grandma Rose stood tall, though I could see her hands shaking behind her back. "We don't owe you anything, Victor. The bank owns our lease—"
"I am the bank in this neighborhood!" Victor snapped, stepping closer.
Before he could lay a hand on the counter, the front door opened again.
Mikhail Volkov’s chief lieutenant, a tall, sharp-featured man named Nikolai, walked inside. He didn't draw a gun. He simply stood in the doorway, removing his leather gloves finger by finger.
"Victor Vance," Nikolai said mildly. "You are standing in the wrong establishment."
Victor spun around, his face morphing from arrogance to pure terror as he recognized the Volkov crest pinned to Nikolai's lapel. "Nikolai? What... what is the Syndicate doing here? This is Northside territory!"
"Not anymore," Nikolai replied smoothly, stepping aside.
Two more men entered, holding heavy metal briefcases. Nikolai looked directly at me and gave a polite, respectful nod.
"Mr. Volkov has purchased the entire block," Nikolai announced to the room. "Including your debt contracts, Vance. You now owe the Volkov Syndicate four million dollars for operating illegal extortion rackets on our land."

Victor turned pale, his knees visibly shaking. "Wait... please! I didn't know! I didn't know this place belonged to Volkov!"
"It doesn't," Nikolai said coldly. "It belongs to Maya and her grandmother. Which makes your presence here a fatal insult to the Boss."
