Chapter 6 - The Courage of a Sister

"Found you," Dimitri spat, a triumphant smile stretching across his bruised face.
Misha screamed, hiding behind me. I immediately stepped in front of the boy, shielding him with my own body.
"Get away from him, Dimitri!" I shouted, holding a sharp steel letter opener I had snatched from the desk.
Dimitri laughed hysterically, stepping into the bunker. "A letter opener? You really think you can stop me, little girl? My brother is dead at the bottom of the lake! The Syndicate belongs to me now!"
"You're lying!" Misha sobbed from behind my back. "Papa isn't dead!"
"He is, boy!" Dimitri barked, raising his pistol toward us. "And once I eliminate you, there will be no heirs left to challenge my claim."
My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. Fear threatened to paralyze me, but then I looked down at Misha's small, trembling hand clutching my shirt. I remembered the cold night he walked into our diner, helpless and afraid.
I promised his father he would be safe.
"Dimitri!" I called out, taking a step forward to draw his attention away from Misha. "If you kill us, the other captains will never follow you! They respect Mikhail! They know you're just a coward who attacks children!"
Dimitri's eyes narrowed in rage. "Shut up!"
He raised the barrel of the gun directly at my forehead.
I squeezed my eyes shut, holding Misha tight, waiting for the shot.
BANG!
A deafening gunshot echoed through the narrow bunker!
But the bullet didn't hit me.

Dimitri gasped, dropping his gun as a red stain spread across his chest. He staggered backward, collapsing onto the cold concrete floor.
Standing in the doorway behind him, his suit torn, blood dripping from his left arm, but his gray eyes blazing with righteous fury, was Mikhail Volkov.
