Chapter 4 - The Whispering Viper

Four years passed in relative peace.
Under the quiet protection of the Volkov family, Rose's Corner Diner blossomed. It became a beloved staple of the neighborhood, famous for its apple pies and warm atmosphere. I grew into a confident sixteen-year-old high school student, excelling in my studies while helping Grandma manage the expanding business.
Misha, now twelve, visited the diner almost every weekend. He became like a younger brother to me, sitting at the same corner booth where I had fed him during the storm, doing his homework while I helped him with math and history.
However, peace in the Chicago underworld is always an illusion.
Mikhail's younger brother, Dimitri Volkov, had recently returned from Europe. Unlike Mikhail, who ruled with calculated discipline and respect, Dimitri was unpredictable, greedy, and envious of his brother's absolute power over the Syndicate.
One rainy afternoon, while Mikhail was in New York attending a business conference, Dimitri walked into the diner accompanied by four heavily armed men.
The diner was empty except for me and Grandma Rose.
Dimitri was a sharp-featured man with slicked-back hair and cold, arrogant eyes. He sat in the center booth, tapping his gold ring against the wooden table.
"So," Dimitri purred, looking at me with distaste. "This is the little charity case my brother spends millions protecting."
"Can I get you something to eat, sir?" I asked calmly, keeping my voice steady despite the tension in the room.
"I don't eat peasant food," Dimitri sneered. "I came to deliver a message. Mikhail has grown weak. He spends his time buying libraries and building youth centers because of you and your sweet old grandmother."
He stood up, leaning over the counter until his face was inches from mine.
"My brother is soft," Dimitri whispered maliciously. "He thinks he can play civilized. But when I take control of the Syndicate, this protection deal ends. You will pay your taxes to me, little girl, or this diner will burn with you inside it."
Before I could answer, the front door clicked open.
Misha stood in the doorway, holding his school folder, flanked by Nikolai.

"Uncle Dimitri?" Misha asked, his small voice echoing in the sudden silence. "What are you doing here?"
Dimitri turned, a dark smile spreading across his face. "Ah, little nephew. Just reminding your friends where they truly stand."
