Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Snow

By 2:00 AM, the penthouse was quiet.

Dr. Harrison, Julian’s private physician, had examined both children. Aside from mild hypothermia and exhaustion, they were uninjured. Jonah was fast asleep in a king-sized bed in the master guest suite, wrapped in heated blankets, his faded teddy bear tucked under his arm. Pearl lay beside him, her small hand firmly grasping her brother's shirt even in sleep.

Julian stood in his dimly lit glass office overlooking the city, holding a crystal glass of dark scotch.

Marcus knocked twice on the open door frame before stepping inside. He carried a secure tablet displaying satellite maps and police band transcripts.

"I sent two team units to Naomi’s apartment on 14th Street, Boss," Marcus reported, his face grim. "The place was tossed. Door kicked off the hinges, blood on the kitchen linoleum. But there’s no body."

Julian turned around slowly. "No body?"

"No," Marcus said. "Our street sources say Valenti’s men took her alive. Carmine Valenti’s second son, Leo, was running an illegal loan-shark operation out of a club on 8th Street. Naomi’s late husband took a forty-thousand-dollar loan three years ago before he skipped town. Leo’s been collecting interest from Naomi ever since."

"Where is she now?"

"We think she’s being held at the old meatpacking plant near the river," Marcus said, scrolling through the tablet. "It’s Leo Valenti’s primary enforcement site. If she’s still breathing, it’s only because Leo wants to use her as leverage to force her family to pay off the interest."

Julian set his glass down on his mahogany desk with a heavy clink.

"Leo Valenti doesn't know she sent the children to me," Julian murmured, his voice turning into ice.

"No, Boss. Nobody knows they're here."

Julian walked to the window, staring down at the distant, snow-covered grid of Detroit. For seven years, he had operated in the shadows, keeping a fragile peace with the surrounding crime families to maintain control of his financial empire. He had convinced himself that feeling nothing was the only way to survive the memory of his lost family.

But looking at Pearl—seeing the fierce, protective love she had for her little brother—had shattered his frozen detachment.

"Call the strike team," Julian commanded calmly.

Marcus blinked, caught off guard. "The strike team? Boss, moving on Valenti territory means starting an all-out war with the South Side syndicate."

Julian turned to face his lieutenant. His dark eyes flickered with a terrifying, ancient fire that Marcus hadn't seen in seven long years.

"Carmine Valenti took my family seven years ago," Julian said softly. "I let him live because I thought peace was worth the silence. Now his son has put a mother in a cellar and left two children to freeze on my steps."

Julian pulled his suit jacket off the chair and adjusted his cuff links.

"Assemble sixteen men," Julian ordered. "We are going to bring Naomi home for Christmas."
