Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Naomi gasped as she looked up through her swollen eyes at the man standing in the room. Seven years had silvered the hair at his temples, but she recognized the sharp, aristocratic jawline and the terrifying authority instantly.
"Mr... Blackwood?" Naomi breathed.
Julian looked at her, his expression softening slightly. "Your daughter is very brave, Naomi. She remembered your words."
Naomi burst into tears—not from pain, but from profound, overwhelming relief. "Pearl... Jonah... are they—"
"They are safe in my home," Julian assured her gently. "They are warm, fed, and sleeping."
Leo Valenti, seeing the connection between Julian and his prisoner, tried to crawl toward a fallen rifle near the generator.
Marcus stepped forward without a word, stomping his heavy tactical boot directly onto Leo’s hand! Leo let out a high-pitched shriek of pain as the bones in his fingers cracked beneath Marcus's weight.
Julian walked over, standing directly over the writhing young mobster.
"Please!" Leo sobbed, clutching his crushed hand. "My father... Don Carmine... he’ll pay you whatever you want! Five hundred thousand! A million! Just let me go!"
Julian reached down, pulled Leo up by his mink collar, and slammed him against the steel pipe beside Naomi.
"Your father took my wife and child seven years ago," Julian whispered into Leo’s ear, every word cutting like a razor. "I spared his life because I thought I had nothing left to protect. I was wrong."
Julian looked at Marcus. "Cut Naomi down."
Marcus pulled a combat knife, slicing through the zip-ties securing Naomi’s wrists. She collapsed forward, but Julian caught her gently by the arms, supporting her weight as she found her footing.
"Can you walk?" Julian asked her softly.
"Yes," Naomi whispered, leaning heavily against his arm.
Julian looked back at Leo, who was weeping on his knees.
"Tell your father that I am taking Naomi and her children under my personal protection," Julian said coldly. "If I see a single Valenti soldier north of the Detroit River after tonight, I will erase your family name from this city. Do you understand me?"

Leo nodded frantically, clutching his bleeding hand against his chest. "Yes! Yes! I swear!"
"Marcus," Julian said, turning toward the exit. "Burn this place to the ground."
