Chapter 6 - The Reunion

The sun began to rise over Detroit, casting a soft pink and gold light across the snow-covered skyline.

Inside the master suite of Blackwood Tower, the fire burned low and warm. Pearl sat on the edge of the large bed, holding a warm cup of sweet tea that the kitchen staff had prepared for her. Jonah was sitting in the middle of the comforter, happily eating a plate of blueberry pancakes.

The heavy oak doors of the bedroom opened softly.

Pearl looked up.

Julian stepped into the room. Behind him stood a woman wrapped in a plush cashmere coat, a clean white bandage over her left temple, her face pale but her eyes shining with unspeakable love.

The teacup slipped from Pearl’s fingers, clattering onto the nightstand.

"Mom?" Pearl whispered, her small voice cracking.

Naomi fell to her knees right there in the doorway, stretching out her arms. "Pearl! Jonah!"

Pearl flew off the bed, her small boots sliding across the hardwood floor as she launched herself into her mother's arms! Jonah dropped his fork, scrambling off the high comforter and tumbling down beside them, burying his face into his mother's coat!

"I'm here! I'm here, baby!" Naomi sobbed, kissing Pearl’s face, holding Jonah so tight against her chest that she couldn't breathe. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry I left you..."

"You told me to go to the tower," Pearl cried, her small hands holding onto Naomi’s hair as if she would disappear if she let go. "I found him, Mom! I told him about Club Azure!"

Naomi looked up over her children’s shoulders at Julian, who stood near the fireplace with his hands resting in his pockets, watching the reunion with a quiet, profound emotion washing over his face.

"Thank you," Naomi whispered to him, her eyes brimming with tears. "Thank you, Mr. Blackwood."

Julian bowed his head slightly. "You saved my life seven years ago, Naomi. Today, we are even."

He stepped toward the door to give them privacy, but Pearl suddenly broke away from her mother and ran up to him. She wrapped her small arms around his waist, pressing her face against his tailored trousers.

Julian froze. He hadn't been hugged by a child in seven years. Slowly, hesitantly, his large, calloused hand rested on the back of Pearl’s head, stroking her soft dark hair.

"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood," Pearl said softly, looking up into his dark eyes. "You really are a good man."

May you like

Julian looked down at her, a gentle, genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in nearly a decade.

"I'm trying to be, Pearl," he whispered. "I'm trying to be."
