Chapter 3 - The Siege Within

The betrayal was immediate, precise, and calculated. For months, Captain Sterling had been quietly placing loyal, corrupt officers on the midnight shift, turning the Cedar Ridge Police Station into a private fortress.

"Drop your belts," Sterling ordered, his gun now drawn and steady. "Both of you. Slow and careful."

Daniel looked at Holt. The veteran sergeant was breathing heavily, his hands trembling with rage, but he knew the math: two guns against four in an enclosed room meant death before they could clear their holsters. Holt unbuckled his duty belt, letting it clatter to the linoleum floor. Daniel followed suit, stepping back slowly.

"Miller," Sterling said without looking away from Daniel. "Go to the lobby. Secure the girl and the flash drive. Take her out the back loading dock to Reed’s transport van."

"What about the dog, Captain?" Miller asked, his voice nervous.

"Kill it," Sterling replied flatly. "Leave no biological mess in the lobby. We’re framing this as a cartel hit on the station. A tragic tragedy during a rainy shift."

Hearing those words—kill the dog, take the girl—something snapped inside Daniel Mercer.

He didn't think about his career. He didn't think about the legal chain of custody. He thought about a seven-year-old girl sitting barefoot on a cold bench, holding a paper bag with white knuckles because she believed this place was a sanctuary.

As Officer Miller turned his back to walk toward the lobby, Daniel struck.

He didn't reach for a weapon. He grabbed the heavy, steel-frame computer monitor off the desk and hurled it with all his strength straight into Captain Sterling’s face.

The heavy monitor smashed into Sterling with a brutal, plastic-shattering crunch. Sterling screamed, his gun discharging wild into the ceiling as he crashed backward into the doorframe.

"Holt, move!" Daniel yelled, throwing his entire body weight into Officer Higgins, driving the corrupt cop backward into the hallway wall.

Holt reacted instantly, diving for his dropped duty belt, coming up with his Glock 17 drawn. TAK-TAK! Two sharp rounds cracked through the hallway air, striking Higgins in the tactical vest, sending the officer sprawling onto his back, gasping for air.

"Lobby!" Daniel roared, scrambling past the groaning Sterling, sprint-running down the narrow corridor toward the front desk.

In the lobby, the atmosphere had shattered into pure chaos.

Officer Miller had already burst through the secure doors, his gun drawn, reaching for Emily. Marla was screaming behind the dispatch glass, slamming her hand down on the red panic button that triggered the station's heavy security shutters.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Steel security grates began dropping over the glass front doors and windows, sealing the lobby off from the outside world.

"Get away from her!" Daniel screamed, sliding across the wet lobby floor like a baseball player hitting home base. He slammed his body straight into Miller’s knees.

Miller went down hard, his gun sliding across the slick terrazzo tile toward the wooden bench.

Emily didn't scream. She had learned long ago that screaming didn't help. Instead, she grabbed the wet paper bag containing the wounded puppy, threw herself beneath the heavy oak front desk, and curled into a tight ball, protecting Barnaby with her body.

Miller scrambled to his feet, pulling a tactical knife from his vest, his eyes wild. "You're dead, Mercer! You hear me? You're all dead!"

Daniel rose from the floor, his combat training taking over. As Miller lunged forward with the blade, Daniel caught the man’s wrist, twisting it inward with a brutal, bone-snapping wrench. The knife dropped. Daniel followed through with an upward elbow strike to Miller’s jaw, knocking the man unconscious before he hit the ground.

"Daniel!" Marla yelled through the dispatch intercom. "The shutters are down! We're locked in! Sterling’s crew controls the main circuit breakers in the basement!"

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered, buzzed, and died.

The entire police station was plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the strobing red emergency backup lights and the pale, ghostly glow of the dispatch monitors.

Through the red-tinted gloom, Daniel ran to the front desk and dropped to his knees. "Emily!"

A small hand reached out from beneath the desk, grabbing his shirt sleeve.

"I kept him safe," she whispered, her voice steady despite the darkness. "I didn't drop him."

Daniel pulled her out from under the desk, wrapping his arms around her and the wet paper bag. He looked up as Sergeant Holt ran into the lobby, his weapon raised, covering the hallway entrance.

"Sterling’s barricaded in the communications room," Holt panted, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead. "He’s trying to wipe the department servers and call in his heavy units from the highway. We have maybe ten minutes before Reed’s men arrive outside with breaching gear."

Daniel looked down at Emily, then at the heavy steel shutters locking them inside a fortress controlled by monsters.

"We aren't waiting for them to breach," Daniel said, his eyes burning in the crimson strobe of the emergency lights. "We're going to the basement, we're flipping the main power back on, and we're sending that encrypted file straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
