Chapter 6 - The Federal Shield

At 10:14 PM, the sky above Cedar Ridge erupted with the thunderous roar of twin-engine Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
The massive tactical aircraft dropped out of the low clouds, their searchlights cutting through the rain like blinding white spears, illuminating the police station parking lot. Federal Marshals and DEA Special Response teams poured out of the helicopters in crisp, lethal formation, breaching the station’s secured perimeter within thirty seconds.
Captain Richard Sterling and his three remaining corrupt officers were pulled from the communications room in plastic flex-cuffs, their faces pale as federal agents stripped them of their badges and sidearms.
Daniel stood near the front desk of the lobby, a paramedic wrapping a compression bandage around his fractured left shoulder. Across the room, two federal medical technicians were tending to Emily, wrapping her in a warm silver thermal blanket, checking her vital signs.
A tall woman in a dark trench coat with a gold FBI badge clipped to her belt walked straight up to Daniel. Special Agent Sarah Carter had cold blue eyes and an air of absolute, uncompromising authority.
"Officer Mercer," Agent Carter said, extending a hand. "I’m Special Agent Carter, DEA Internal Oversight. We’ve been tracking Aegis Logistics and Gavin Reed for fourteen months. We knew there was a high-level leak in Cedar Ridge, but every time we tried to secure local warrants, the target locations were cleaned out."
"It was Sterling," Daniel said, his voice hoarse from smoke inhalation. "He was running protection for Reed’s operations from inside this building."
"We saw the files transmitted from your terminal," Carter said, looking around the scarred lobby with deep respect. "You and your team took down a multi-million-dollar cartel network with a three-person night shift and a seven-year-old kid."
"The kid did the hard part," Daniel said, turning his head to look at Emily.
Agent Carter walked over to the bench where Emily sat. The federal agent dropped to one knee, softening her severe expression.
"Emily," Agent Carter said gently. "Your mother... Susan... was a very brave woman. She contacted our task force three weeks ago. She was the one who gathered those files off Gavin’s private laptop while he was sleeping. She wanted to make sure you had a safe life, far away from here."
Emily held the paper bag tightly in her lap. The puppy inside was now resting quietly, wrapped in a sterile medical towel, breathing steadily after receiving an emergency antibiotic injection from the department’s veterinary contact.
"Is Mom gone?" Emily asked softly.
The room went quiet again. The federal agents, the paramedics, the local officers—everyone stopped to hear the answer they all wished didn't have to be given.
Agent Carter looked Emily directly in the eyes, refusing to lie to her. "Yes, sweetheart. She is. But she saved your life. And because of what you did tonight, Gavin Reed will never, ever be able to hurt anyone again."
Emily looked down at the paper bag. A single tear slipped down her cheek, cutting a clean line through the dirt on her skin.
"I promised her I wouldn't drop him," Emily whispered. "I kept my promise."

Daniel walked over, ignoring the pain in his shoulder, and sat down on the bench beside her. He reached out and gently took her small, cold hand in his.
"You did more than keep a promise, Emily," Daniel said softly. "You saved Barnaby. You saved this town. You are the braves person I have ever met."
