Chapter 9 - The New Watch

One year later.
The front doors of the Cedar Ridge Police Department slid open at 9:46 p.m. with the familiar, soft electric chime.
Outside, a gentle spring rain was falling, making the parking lot shine under the streetlights. The lobby smelled of fresh coffee, floor wax, and the quiet, comforting routine of a peaceful night shift.
Officer Tommy Vance—now a confident second-year patrol officer—sat at the front desk, completing his end-of-shift logs. Beside him sat Officer Daniel Mercer, his shoulder fully healed, working on a community outreach program proposal.
The door chimed.
A young woman walked into the lobby carrying a large cardboard box filled with wrapped baked goods and thermos bottles of hot chocolate.
Beside her ran a healthy, vibrant Golden Retriever with a shiny red collar, his tail thumping happily against the doorframe. And holding his leash was an eight-year-old girl with laughing hazel eyes, wearing a yellow rain slicker and bright pink boots.
"Delivery for the night shift!" Emily announced proudly, her voice bouncing off the high ceilings of the lobby.
Barnaby immediately trotted over to Daniel, placing his massive golden head on Daniel’s knee, waiting for his customary head scratches.
"Well, well," Daniel smiled, coming out from behind the desk, kneeling down to give the dog a vigorous rub behind the ears. "If it isn't the real Chief of Police inspecting the facility."
Dr. Clara Vance walked in behind them, laughing softly. "She insisted we come at exactly 9:46. She said it’s an official tradition."
"It is a tradition," Emily declared, placing a plate of homemade cinnamon rolls on the front desk. "Every year on October 24th, we bring supplies to the people who keep us safe."
Tommy Vance accepted a cinnamon roll with a massive smile. "Best tradition this department has ever had, Emily."
Emily walked over to the wooden bench near the wall—the same bench where she had sat a year ago, barefoot, bleeding, holding a wet paper bag containing a dying puppy.
She sat down on the smooth oak wood, swinging her feet—now comfortably encased in shiny pink boots—looking around the bright, warm lobby.
There were no whispers down dark hallways tonight. No corrupt officers hiding behind badges. No fear lurking in the shadows. There was only light, safety, and the unbreakable bond of a community rebuilt from the ashes of betrayal.
Daniel walked over and sat down beside her on the bench, just as he had done on that terrifying night.
"How’s school going, Detective?" Daniel asked gently.
"I won the science fair," Emily reported happily, pulling a folded ribbon from her pocket. "We made a model of how storm drains work and how water finds its way home."
"Water always finds its way home," Daniel agreed softly. "And so do brave people."
Emily leaned her head against Daniel’s arm, watching Barnaby chase his own tail near the water fountain.
"Officer Daniel?" she asked quietly.
"Yeah, Emily?"
"When I came through those doors last year... I was so scared my heart felt like it was going to stop."
"I know, sweetheart," Daniel said, his voice thick with memory.
"But when you sat down on the floor so I didn't have to look up at you..." She turned her face to look at him, her hazel eyes shining with absolute trust. "...I knew I didn't have to walk anymore."

Daniel wrapped his arm around her shoulders, holding her close as the clock on the wall clicked softly to 9:47 PM.
Outside, the rain fell gently against the glass, but inside the Cedar Ridge Police Department, it was warm, dry, and entirely safe.
