Chapter 5 - The Snake's Counterattack

Cornered animals fight the dirtiest.
Stripped of his CEO title, facing an aggressive corporate audit, and cut off from Madeline’s money, Jeffrey was drowning. His bank accounts were frozen under a court injunction obtained by Vance Croft. Cynthia was threatening to leave him unless he secured liquid cash, and Noelle was having hysterical breakdowns every hour as marshals served foreclosure notices on their luxury vehicles.
Desperate, Jeffrey met with a sleazy tabloid journalist and a crooked family law attorney in a dark booth at a downtown steakhouse.
"We go on the offensive," Jeffrey snarled, sloshing whiskey in his glass. "We paint Madeline as an unfit, career-obsessed mother who abandoned her child to live a lavish lifestyle in Europe. We leak fake emails showing she neglected Liam before she left. We make the public hate her."
The following morning, front-page headlines across local media and online gossip outlets exploded:
‘TECH HEIRESS ABANDONED ABUSED SON FOR LONDON JET-SET LIFE: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DISTRAUGHT FATHER.’
The articles contained doctored photos of Madeline attending formal corporate galas in Europe, framed alongside distorted quotes from Noelle claiming Madeline left her child starving in Atlanta while spending millions on private jets.
The public backlash was swift. Angry comments poured in on social media, demanding an investigation into Madeline. Protesters even showed up outside the corporate headquarters of Vance Tech Solutions carrying signs demanding "Justice for Baby Liam."
In her countryside home, Madeline sat at her kitchen counter reviewing the headlines. Vance Croft was on speakerphone.
"Madeline, this is a smear campaign designed to force us into a settlement," Croft warned. "If public opinion sours too much, the family court judge might order an independent evaluation, which could delay our full legal victory."
"Let him play his media game, Vance," Madeline replied, unfazed. "Jeffrey thinks this is a court of public opinion. He forgets that I own the actual media server architecture behind his primary investor network."
"What are you planning?"
"Jeffrey is holding a press conference at twelve o'clock today on the steps of the Fulton County Courthouse," Madeline said, a dark smile spreading across her lips. "He wants cameras? I’ll give him the show of his life."
At 12:00 PM, dozens of news vans and reporters gathered outside the courthouse steps. Jeffrey stood behind a podium, wearing a sharp black suit, accompanied by Noelle, who was dabbing fake tears with a handkerchief, and Cynthia, who stood solemnly in the background.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Jeffrey began, his voice quivering with performative grief. "I stand before you today not as an executive, but as a heartbroken father. My wife, Madeline, abandoned our home two years ago. When she returned, she took my son from his bed in the middle of the night. She is using our child as a pawn to steal my company..."
Suddenly, every news crew's monitor and the large digital public announcement board mounted on the courthouse plaza flickered.
The live feed cut out.
In its place, a crisp, high-definition video feed began playing across every news broadcast and big screen in the plaza.
It was the interior camera feed from the Buckhead mansion dated two months prior.
The audio roared through the plaza speakers:
On screen, Cynthia was seen intentionally slapping a four-year-old child's hand away from the dinner table, laughing as Noelle poured a cloudy liquid from a prescription bottle into his water cup.
“Keep him dosed,” Noelle’s voice echoed across the courthouse steps, loud and crystal clear. “If he’s awake, Jeffrey can’t focus on transferring the patents. Once Madeline gets back, we’ll show her a drooling idiot, and she’ll hand over the European shares just to keep him out of a state ward.”

The gathered press corps went dead silent. Hundreds of cameras instantly turned away from Jeffrey and pointed toward his shocked, horrified face.
The trap had sprung.
