Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING

By Friday morning, news of the lawsuit against Parker and Apex Horizons had spread through the local business community like wildfire.
Jonathan Hayes, Parker’s high-profile partner on the Regional Planning Commission, was officially placed on administrative leave by the Mayor’s office after the Attorney General’s Fraud Unit launched a formal inquiry into his land acquisition schemes.
Furious and facing potential federal charges, Hayes drove straight to Columbus, storming into Alana’s apartment building at 10:00 AM.
The door opened, and Hayes shoved his way inside, pointing an angry finger at Parker’s face.
"You idiot!" Hayes shouted, his voice echoing through the small apartment. "You guaranteed me your wife was a pushover! You told me she would sign the country house collateral forms without even looking at them!"
Parker backed away, holding his hands up defensively. "Jonathan, calm down! We can still fix this—"
"Fix it?!" Hayes yelled, laughing hysterically. "The State Attorney General subpoenaed my private emails an hour ago! The hard-money lenders executed their default penalty at midnight! They’ve seized our corporate bank accounts and placed a lien on my personal home! I’m ruined because you couldn't control your own household!"
"It wasn't my fault!" Parker yelled back, pointing at his mother sitting weeping on the couch. "My mother and sister treated her kid like a dog while she was at work! They let her catch them! She recorded everything!"
Hayes turned his head, looking at Alana and Ellie with pure, unadulterated contempt. "You starved a kid over a piece of fried chicken, and it cost us three million dollars?"
"He’s not even a real Bailey!" Alana screamed back, her face twisted with bitter, desperate arrogance. "He’s an adopted charity case! Clarissa had no right to treat us like criminals over a little discipline!"
Hayes stared at Alana for five seconds, dumbfounded by her complete lack of awareness. "You elderly fool," Hayes said quietly, shaking his head. "You aren't just cruel. You're mind-numbingly stupid. Have fun explaining your 'discipline' to the judge on Monday."
Hayes turned around, slammed the apartment door shut, and walked out, leaving Parker and his family in absolute ruin.
Meanwhile, back at the country house, the atmosphere was a stark contrast of peace, light, and healing.
The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the kitchen. Clarissa was standing at the counter, flipping fresh blueberry pancakes. Beside her sat Dustin, his cheeks rosy and full, laughing as he poured maple syrup over his plate.
Marcus Brody stepped into the kitchen carrying a hot mug of coffee. "Good morning, Clarissa."
"Morning, Marcus," Clarissa smiled, setting a plate of pancakes down in front of her son. "Any updates from Detroit?"
"The hard-money lenders executed their default liens against Apex Horizons at midnight," Brody reported, leaning against the counter. "Parker’s personal savings accounts have been wiped out to satisfy the loan penalties. He is officially dead broke. His credit rating has dropped into the low 400s overnight."
Clarissa took a slow sip of her tea. "And the criminal investigation?"
"The Attorney General’s office has formally accepted our audit files," Brody confirmed. "Indictments for bank forgery and corporate insider trading will likely be issued within thirty days. Parker isn't just facing financial ruin; he’s looking at three to five years in a federal penitentiary."
Dustin looked up from his pancakes, his big brown eyes searching his mother’s face. "Mom? Are we ever going back to Detroit?"
Clarissa walked over, knelt beside her son's chair, and wrapped her arms around his small shoulders. She looked around the sunlit kitchen—the house she had bought with her own hard work, the land where her son was safe, loved, and protected.
"We’re staying right here, baby," Clarissa said gently, kissing his cheek. "This is our home. Nobody is ever going to tell you where you belong again. You belong right here, next to me."
Dustin smiled, wrapping his small arms around her neck. "I love you, Mom."
"I love you too, sweetie."

Clarissa stood up, her gaze shifting to the window overlooking the bright green garden outside. The preliminary court hearing was set for Monday morning. Parker, Alana, and Ellie thought they were coming to court to defend their dignity.
They had no idea that Clarissa was about to deliver the final, devastating blow.
