Chapter 8 - RESTORATION

Spring arrived at the country house six weeks later. The snow melted from the green hills, and the wild flowers around the front porch bloomed in vibrant shades of yellow, purple, and blue.

Clarissa sat on the warm wooden porch, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. Beside her on the grass, Dustin was playing with a golden retriever puppy Clarissa had adopted for him from a local shelter—a joyful, energetic dog named Barnaby.

Dustin was laughing hysterically as Barnaby chased a red ball across the lawn, tumbling over the soft grass without a care in the world. The dark shadows that had hung over the little boy’s face during those terrible days in winter were completely gone. His laughter was bright, pure, and free.

Arthur Vance and Marcus Brody drove up the gravel driveway, parking near the porch. They stepped out carrying legal folders, smiling as Dustin ran over to greet them.

"Hey there, sport!" Vance chuckled, patting Dustin on the head before turning to Clarissa. "Good afternoon, Clarissa."

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Clarissa smiled, gesturing to the porch chairs. "Can I offer you some iced tea?"

"We’d love some," Brody said, sitting down. "We have final updates on the asset recovery process."

Brody pulled out a summary document. "The court-ordered liquidation of Parker’s remaining private investments has been completed. The full $220,000 stolen from your joint savings has been restored to your private account, along with $45,000 in court-ordered civil damages paid directly from Apex Horizons' seized assets."

"And the Detroit townhome?" Clarissa asked.

"The title modification has been completely voided," Vance confirmed. "The townhome is 100% in your name. We’ve already listed it on the real estate market, and we have an offer above asking price from a young family who wants to buy it next week."

Clarissa let out a deep, quiet breath of relief. Every piece of her life that Parker had tried to steal had been reclaimed. Her finances were secure, her homes were protected, and her career as a Senior Forensic Auditor had flourished even further after her firm commended her for her exceptional bravery and skill in dismantling the fraud ring.

"What about Parker’s criminal trial?" Clarissa asked softly.

"He took a plea bargain yesterday morning," Vance replied. "To avoid a lengthy trial, he pleaded guilty to two counts of Felony Forgery and Corporate Fraud. The judge sentenced him to four years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole."

Clarissa nodded slowly. She felt no vengeance, no bitter hatred—only a profound sense of closure. Parker had made his choices, driven by greed and arrogance, and now he was paying the price demanded by justice.

"Thank you, Arthur. Thank you, Marcus," Clarissa said warmly, looking at both men. "You saved my family."

"No, Clarissa," Vance smiled, looking out at Dustin playing happily on the lawn with his dog. "You saved your family. We just provided the paperwork."
