Chapter 9 - The Harbor of New Beginnings

The transition from a ruthless corporate bachelor to a father of two traumatized children wasn't easy, but Marcus approached it with the same absolute dedication that had built his financial empire. He stepped down as CEO of Whitfield Harbor Group, appointing Renee Castellan as his successor, keeping only his seat on the board of directors.

He bought a beautiful, sprawling estate on San Juan Island, surrounded by old-growth forests, rolling hills, and the quiet waters of the Puget Sound. There were no cameras, no corporate towers, and no hidden agendas.

Six months after the raid on Haven Bridge, the gardens of the island estate were blooming with white lilies—Iris’s favorite flower.

Wren was running through the grass, her hair clean and shining in the sun, wearing a beautiful green linen dress. Behind her, Milo was riding a small, custom-made electric green toy tractor, his laughter echoing across the lawn.

Marcus sat on the wrap-around porch, drinking a cup of coffee, watching them play. Desmond Cole sat beside him, reviewing some old files.

"They're adjusting well, Marcus," Desmond said, nodding toward the kids. "The nightmares have stopped. Wren's grades are top of her class, and Milo hasn't let go of that tractor since you pulled him out of that ravine."

"They saved me, Desmond," Marcus said softly, looking down at a framed photograph of Iris on the small table beside his chair. "I thought I was building an empire to protect myself from the world. I didn't realize I was just building a cage."

Wren suddenly stopped running, looked up at the porch, and shouted at the top of her lungs.

"Daddy! Come look at the seal in the bay!"

Marcus’s heart swelled with a feeling that no multi-million dollar acquisition could ever replicate. He stood up, smiling, and walked down the steps into the bright afternoon sun, ready to meet his family.
