Chapter 6 - The Montauk Bluff

By 3:00 a.m., the Jaguar pulled into a hidden cove near the Montauk lighthouse. The ocean was a churning cauldron of black water and white foam, battered by the gale-force winds of the nor'easter.
Waiting at the dock was a rusted seventy-foot commercial fishing vessel named The Sea Hound.
Standing on the wooden deck in a yellow oilskin slicker was a weathered man in his late fifties, his face lined by decades of salt spray and sun. His hair was gray, but his broad shoulders and steady hands spoke of a life spent pulling nets from the deep ocean.
His name was Caleb Miller—the disgraced fisherman Marianne had fallen in love with eight years ago.
When Vance had called him from the road, Caleb had dropped his gear and prepped his boat immediately.
"Beatrice," Caleb said, his voice gravelly as he helped the old woman down the slick wooden ramp onto his boat. "Is it true? Is she alive?"
"She is alive, Caleb," Beatrice said, tears mixing with the rain on her face. "And this is your daughter."
Caleb stopped dead in his tracks. He turned to look at little Emma, who was staring up at him with wide, curious gray-blue eyes—the exact same eyes he saw in his mirror every morning.
Caleb fell to his knees on the wet wooden deck. His large, calloused hands trembled as he reached out, gently touching Emma’s shoulder.
"Emma..." he choked out, a sob rising from his chest. "I didn't know... I swear to God, I thought she left me. They told me she went to France... they paid off my boat loan and threatened to burn my family's wharf if I ever looked for her..."
Emma looked into his face, saw the absolute truth and love in his eyes, and reached out to hug his neck. Caleb wrapped his arms around his daughter, crying openly against the backdrop of the roaring ocean.
"We have to go now!" Vance yelled over the sound of the wind. "Victor’s men will trace my phone location soon!"

Caleb wiped his eyes, picked up Emma in his arms, and turned to the wheelhouse. "Cast off the lines! We’re heading for Dead Man’s Ledge!"
The heavy diesel engines of The Sea Hound roared to life, pushing the fishing vessel out into the violent, storm-tossed waters of the Atlantic.
