Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

"Marianne!" Beatrice cried out, her voice echoing through the hollow stone courtyard as Vance shoved open the heavy oak double doors.
The room froze.
Victor spun around, his face turning dark with fury. "Mother! How did you get onto this island?!"
Marianne stopped in her tracks. She looked past Victor, past the guards, and saw her mother standing in the doorway, supported by Vance and a cane.
"Mom?" Marianne whispered, her voice barely a breath, sounding like a person who had forgotten how to speak after years of isolation.
Then her eyes shifted to the tall, bearded man standing beside her mother.
"Caleb..."
And then she saw the small girl strapped to Caleb’s chest.
"Emma!" Marianne screamed, bursting into tears, trying to break away from the security guard who held her arm. "Emma! You made it! You found them!"
"Get them out of here!" Victor ordered his guards, pulling a small silver pistol from his coat pocket. "Put Marianne on the helicopter now!"
"Touch her again, Victor, and I will tear this place apart with my bare hands," Caleb roared, stepping forward like a wild animal.
Oliver stepped in front of his father, looking terrified as he watched the scene unfold. "Father... this has gone too far. There are coast guard ships patrolling the channel! If they catch us with weapons—"
"Shut up, Oliver!" Victor shouted, his eyes wide and unhinged. "Everything I built... the shipping contracts... the company reputation... it all vanishes if she speaks! I did this for the family!"
"You did it for yourself!" Beatrice shouted, stepping forward without her cane, driven by a sudden, miraculous surge of maternal fury. "You locked your sister away because your father left thirty percent of the voting stock to her unborn child! You did it for greed, Victor! Pure, filthy greed!"
Victor’s hand trembled as he pointed the pistol at Caleb. "It doesn't matter. No one leaves this island. I own the local authorities. I own the judges. I will claim you were all lost at sea in the storm."
"You don't own the federal government, Victor," Arthur Vance said calmly, pulling a satellite phone from his coat pocket.
"What?" Victor blinked.
"Before we boarded Caleb’s boat, I transmitted the entire offshore ledger, the false medical records, and the GPS coordinates of this facility directly to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York," Vance said, a tight, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "And if I’m not mistaken... listen."
Through the roaring storm outside, a deep, rhythmic thumping sound began to echo from the sky.
Bright, blinding searchlights cut through the high windows of the hallway. A massive Coast Guard helicopter hovered directly over the courtyard, flanked by two fast-response tactical boats pulling up to the pier outside.

A booming loudspeaker echoed from above:
"Victor Holloway! This is the United States Coast Guard! Lower your weapons and surrender immediately! The facility is surrounded!"
