Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

Oliver dropped his head into his hands and sank to his knees, completely breaking down in tears as he raised his hands in surrender.
Victor looked at the blinding lights outside, then down at the silver pistol in his hand. He looked at his mother, at his sister, and at the small granddaughter he had tried to erase.
For a second, it seemed as though he might pull the trigger.
Then, with a heavy, broken sigh, Victor let the gun slip from his fingers. It clattered uselessly onto the cold stone floor.
The heavy doors were kicked open by federal tactical agents in black gear, weapons raised. Within seconds, Victor and Oliver were forced to the ground, handcuffed, and read their rights under federal kidnapping, conspiracy, and financial fraud charges.
As Victor was dragged past his mother, he stopped and looked at her one last time.
"I kept the company profitable, Mother," he whispered, his voice empty.
"You traded your soul for a ledger, Victor," Beatrice said quietly, turning her back on him forever. "May God have mercy on you, because I will not."
Caleb rushed forward, pulling Marianne into a fierce, desperate embrace. They wept together, their tears washing away eight years of pain, separation, and lies.
Emma wiggled out of her harness and wrapped her arms around both of her parents, completing the circle that had been broken so long ago.
Beatrice walked over slowly, sinking down onto the wooden bench beside them. She reached out and took Marianne’s hand, pressing it against her cheek.

"I’m sorry, my sweet girl," Beatrice sobbed. "I’m so sorry I didn't see through his lies sooner."
"You came for me, Mom," Marianne whispered, leaning her head against Beatrice’s shoulder. "You brought my baby home."
