Chapter 9 - The Trial's End

Six months later.
The federal courthouse in downtown San Antonio was crowded with reporters, news cameras, and former residents of Oak Ridge Apartments.
The trial of Donald Vance and his corporate co-conspirators had concluded after two weeks of explosive testimony. The federal prosecution team had presented a bulletproof case: digital bank trails, forged safety inspections, corrupted maintenance logs, and expert structural engineering testimony proving that the building’s overhang had been a ticking time bomb for over two years.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the jury foreperson stood up to read the verdict.
"On count one, Federal Bank Fraud... Guilty. On count two, Wire Fraud... Guilty. On count three, Conspiracy to Endanger Human Life... Guilty."
Donald Vance collapsed back into his leather chair at the defense table, burying his face in his hands as the judge read the final sentencing order: twenty-four years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary, accompanied by a complete liquidation of his personal real estate portfolio to pay twelve million dollars in restitution to the displaced families.
Outside on the courthouse steps, news cameras flashed as Rachel Turner stood beside Jack Donovan, surrounded by members of the Iron Guardians.
A reporter thrust a microphone toward Rachel. "Mrs. Turner! How do you feel now that the management team is going to prison?"
Rachel looked at the microphone, then turned her head to look at Jack, who stood tall and quiet behind her in his leather vest.
"Justice was done today," Rachel said into the microphone, her voice firm, clear, and ringing with confidence. "A group of greedy men thought they could put lives at risk for money because they thought nobody was watching. But they didn't know that real strength doesn't wear expensive suits. Real strength protects people who can't protect themselves."
The crowd on the courthouse steps broke into cheers and applause.
Jack reached down, taking Rachel's hand in his, his large thumb gently caressing her knuckles.

"Ready to go home, Rachel?" Jack asked softly.
"Ready," she smiled, looking up into his eyes.
