Chapter 3 - The Boardroom’s Revenge

An hour later, Lily was resting fitfully in a private room on the pediatric intensive care unit, her breathing assisted by a low-flow nasal cannula. The room was dim, the silence broken only by the steady hum of the medical machinery. Sarah sat on a small chair beside the bed, her hand never releasing her daughter’s fingers.

Felix stood in the hallway outside, his phone pressed to his ear. His jaw was set so tightly that his teeth ached.

“We have the security footage from the hospital pharmacy vault, Felix,” Marco reported from the other end of the line, his voice tight. “A woman dressed in a standard nursing uniform entered the restricted storage area at nine o’clock this morning. She bypassed the biometric lock using an administrative override code assigned to your mother’s personal foundation account. She swapped the standard steroid vials in the emergency room carts with the recalled stock.”

“Did you get a clear angle on her face?” Felix asked, his voice dropping into a register that made a passing resident step away from him in fear.

“She wore a surgical mask and a cap, but her gate and height match Celeste’s personal assistant, Nora Vance,” Marco said. “And there’s more. The breakfast food from the school? We ran a quick chemical screen on the residue left in the container. It was laced with trace amounts of powdered walnut shell—the exact allergen that triggers Lily’s primary respiratory inflammation. It wasn't a mistake, Felix. They triggered the attack at the school to guarantee you would bring her to this specific emergency room.”

Felix closed his eyes, a wave of profound nausea washing over him. His mother, Odette, and his fiancée, Celeste, had conspired to turn a six-year-old child’s immune system into a tactical weapon to destroy his resolve. They knew that if Lily was in danger, he would abandon the billion-dollar merger with the European conglomerate, allowing Odette to claim he was mentally unstable and seize his voting shares in the Kingsley Group.

The elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open with a soft chime.

Odette Kingsley walked out, followed by a phalanx of three corporate attorneys and her personal security detail. She looked immaculate, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her woolen coat completely unaffected by the winter slush outside. She walked down the pristine white corridor with the absolute authority of a monarch visiting a rebellious province.

“Felix,” she said, stopping a few feet away from him. She didn't look toward the glass window of Lily’s room. “The board has reached a consensus. Your sudden departure from a federally mandated disclosure hearing has created an unacceptable liability for our upcoming merger. We have filed an emergency petition with the probate court to temporarily suspend your chief executive powers due to emotional incapacitation.”

Felix didn't yell. He didn't move. He simply leaned against the wall, looking at his mother as if she were a stranger he was studying under a microscope.

“You used an override code from your own charity foundation to give Celeste’s assistant access to a recalled medication vault, Mother,” Felix said quietly.

Odette’s expression didn't change by a single millimeter. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. You are hallucinating under the stress of this unfortunate woman’s domestic drama. Sarah Marlowe has been an anchor around your neck for seven years, Felix. It’s time to let her drown before she drags our family name into the mud with her.”
