Chapter 5 - The Exile’s Kitchen

Three days later, Lily was officially discharged from St. Jude’s. She was still pale, but her laughter had returned, stimulated by the giant plush bear Felix had delivered to their small, temporary apartment in Queens. It was a modest two-bedroom flat hidden away from the glamorous Manhattan districts—a place Celeste’s high-society spies would never think to look.

The kitchen was small, the countertops lined with old laminate instead of the imported marble of Marlowe House. But the air was warm, filled with the rich, intoxicating scent of caramelized sugar, roasted vanilla beans, and fresh rosemary.

Sarah stood over a small gas stove, a wooden spoon in her hand, stirring a dark amber reduction. It was her father’s signature glaze—the one that had made their small family bakery in Vermont famous before Felix’s talent scouts had discovered it seven years ago.

Felix sat at the small laminate table, a laptop open before him, surrounded by stacks of legal documents and financial printouts Marco had smuggled out of the Kingsley headquarters. He had traded his tailored suits for a simple grey sweater, his face showing a light stubble that made him look younger, more like the man Sarah had fallen in love with in the kitchens of Vermont.

“The board approved my mother’s petition this morning,” Felix said, looking up from the screen. “Celeste has been appointed as the temporary creative director of Marlowe House to reassure the European investors. They are moving the merger deadline up to Friday to lock in the stock valuation before our legal challenge can hit the public docket.”

Sarah tasted the glaze from the back of the spoon, her eyes closing as the flavors exploded across her palate. “Let them try. Celeste doesn't know how to balance the acidity in the winter menu. She thinks presentation can replace preparation. My father spent forty years perfecting that reduction, Felix. If she tries to mass-produce it for the European launch without the stabilization agent, the sauce will separate on the plate within ten minutes of service.”

Felix smiled, a genuine, warm expression that hadn't crossed his face in years. “You really are a genius, Sarah.”

“I’m a cook, Felix,” she said softly, turning off the gas. She walked over to the table, her expression turning serious. “Why did you do it? Truly. You gave up everything you built over the last decade. Your name is on those buildings.”

Felix reached out, gently taking her hand. This time, his grip was firm, unyielding. “My name was on those buildings, Sarah, but my soul was in the kitchen with you seven years ago. When my mother forced you out… when she told me you had taken the money and abandoned me because you didn't want to be a billionaire’s wife… I let myself believe the lie because it was easier than fighting her. But when I saw Lily fighting for her breath in that room… I realized that an empire built on your silence is just a monument to my own cowardice. I’m done being a coward.”

Before Sarah could reply, the small television in the corner of the living room flashed an emergency news bulletin. The anchor’s voice was high-pitched, dramatic.

“Breaking news from the culinary world. A massive food safety scandal is unfolding at the flagship Marlowe House restaurant in Manhattan. Dozens of high-profile investors and food critics have been rushed to emergency rooms following an exclusive preview dinner hosted by Celeste Arden. Early reports suggest widespread chemical contamination in the signature dessert course…”
