Chapter 7 - The Final Strategy

The boardroom forty-two floors above Manhattan was no longer cold; it was suffocatingly hot, thick with the sweat of panicked billionaires and terrified legal advisers. The hard blue winter sky outside had turned into a dark, stormy grey, casting long, ominous shadows across the massive glass conference table.
Odette Kingsley sat at the head of the table, but she no longer looked like a monarch. Her silver hair had a few loose strands, her suit jacket was unbuttoned, and her fingers were trembling as she reviewed the financial tickers showing the Kingsley Hospitality Group stock crashing by forty percent in early morning trading.
Celeste Arden sat beside her, but she was no longer wearing her white suit. She wore a dark, crumpled coat, her eyes frantic, surrounded by two criminal defense attorneys who kept whispering in her ears.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Felix Kingsley walked in. He wore no suit, no tie, just a clean black sweater and jeans. Beside him walked Sarah Marlowe, carrying a simple leather briefcase. They didn't take the seats in the middle. They walked straight to the head of the table, standing directly opposite Odette.
“Felix,” Odette gasped, her voice cracking as she reached out a hand toward him. “Thank God you’re here. The board is ready to sign the full reinstatement order. We can blame the entire contamination scandal on a localized supply chain glitch. Celeste’s assistant has agreed to take the full legal responsibility for a ten-million-dollar settlement fee. We can save the merger if we announce your return by noon.”
Celeste looked up, her face twisted in a mixture of fear and hatred. “You have to help us, Felix. If the company goes under, your personal trust fund goes with it. We’re in this together.”
Felix looked at Celeste, then at his mother. The disgust in his eyes was absolute.
“We are not in this together, Celeste,” Felix said, his voice echoing through the silent room like a gavel striking wood. “Nora Vance isn't taking the fall for you. Marco handed over the security footage from the hospital pharmacy to the district attorney’s office two hours ago. They know you ordered the swap of the steroid vials to target Lily. They also have the financial logs showing your brother’s company supplied the toxic stabilizing agent to the restaurant.”
Celeste’s lead attorney immediately packed his folders. “We are leaving. My client has no further comments.”

Two uniformed NYPD detectives stepped into the room from the corridor, blocking the exit. One of them pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Celeste Arden, you are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate reckless endangerment, and consumer fraud. Step forward.”
Celeste let out a high-pitched, desperate shriek as the steel clicked around her wrists. She dragged her feet as the detectives escorted her out, her elegant world dissolving into the harsh reality of a criminal processing cell.
