Chapter 10 - The View from the Top

At 9:00 PM, the chime of a crystal glass signaled the beginning of the evening's main address. Emmett Stewart stepped onto the stage, looking magnificent in a classic black tuxedo. The room fell into an instant, respectful silence—a stark contrast to the superficial quiet of Nicholas's wedding a year prior.
"Good evening, everyone," Emmett began, his voice commanding the room with effortless authority. "A little over a year ago, I attended an event where I found the most brilliant mind in our industry exiled to a corner table, hidden away because people failed to see her value. They thought success was defined by loud assertions and expensive watches. They were wrong."
My parents leaned forward at Table Nineteen, my mother wiping a quiet tear from her eye as Emmett spoke.
"True power," Emmett continued, looking directly at me where I stood near the front of the stage, "is silent. It is the architect who designs the framework of our global narratives. It is the integrity that refuses to be compromised by the arrogance of others. Tonight, we celebrate the expansion of Vance Strategic Comms, but more importantly, we celebrate the woman who proved that you don't need to step on others to reach the top. You just need to build a higher floor."
The room erupted into thundering applause. Emmett extended his hand toward me, inviting me onto the stage.
I walked up the steps, wearing a breathtaking custom midnight-blue gown that flowed behind me like the deep ocean. I stood at the podium, looking out at the sea of powerful people who were all standing in my honor. I looked past the VIP section, past the investors and CEOs, straight to the back corner of the room.
My father was standing, his hands clapping with a raw, genuine pride he had never shown before. My mother was smiling through her tears, nodding at me as if finally recognizing the daughter she had missed for thirty years. They finally understood who I was.
After my speech, the formal part of the evening transitioned into a vibrant celebration. I mingled with clients, finalized contracts for our London office, and thanked my team for their incredible hard work.
As the night began to wind down, Emmett guided me out toward the museum's private sculpture garden, away from the lingering guests and the flashing cameras. The spring air was warm, filled with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine.
"You were spectacular tonight, Jenna," Emmett said, pulling me into his arms. He looked down at me, his eyes reflecting the soft starlight overhead. He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, opening it to reveal a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the light perfectly.
"Emmett..." I whispered, my breath catching in my throat.
"I don't want to just be your biggest client or your partner in business, Jenna," Emmett said, his voice deep with emotion. "I want to be the man who stands beside you through every victory, every challenge, and every quiet night at two in the morning. I love you for exactly who you are. Will you marry me?"
I looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had crossed an entire ballroom just to sit beside me when the rest of the world had hidden me away.
May you like
"Yes, Emmett," I smiled, tears of pure happiness blurring my vision as he slipped the ring onto my finger. "A thousand times, yes."
We stood in the quiet garden, holding each other tightly as the music from the ballroom faded into the background. My brother had tried to humiliate me, my family had tried to diminish me, but in their attempt to hide my light, they had only forced me to ignite a fire that destroyed their illusions and illuminated my true destiny. The view from the top was breathtaking, and for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I belonged.
