Chapter 7 - The Counter-Attack

Just when I thought the storm had settled, Nicholas and my parents attempted one final, desperate maneuver to salvage their social standing. Realizing they couldn't force me to help them through private manipulation, they decided to weaponize the media.
On a Friday morning, an exclusive article was published on a mid-tier local society blog with the headline: Tech Billionaire's Secret Muse Accused of Turning Her Back on Family in Financial Ruin.
The article, clearly sourced from anonymous quotes provided by my mother and Chloe, painted a deeply distorted picture. It portrayed me as a vindictive, secretive woman who had used her corporate connections to systematically destroy her brother’s career out of a childhood grudge, leaving his new marriage in ruins while I lived in luxury.
My phone blew up within minutes of the article going live. My agency's public relations director ran into my office, her face pale.
"Jenna, we need to issue a statement immediately," she said, hovering over my desk. "This is tracking on local business Twitter. They're trying to damage your agency's reputation by making you look toxic."
Before I could reply, the door to my office opened and Emmett walked in. He didn't look angry; he looked absolutely incandescent with protective rage. He had a printout of the article in his hand.
"They've gone too far, Jenna," Emmett said, his voice vibrating with power. "They are attempting to weaponize your professional silence against you. They think because you signed NDAs, you can't defend yourself without violating your contracts."
I stood up, walking around my desk. "It's a classic smear campaign, Emmett. They want to scare me into a settlement. Nicholas thinks if he threatens my agency's credibility, I'll pay him off to make it disappear."
"Then he has forgotten who your primary client is," Emmett said, a dangerous smile touching his lips. He turned to my PR director. "Cancel whatever statement you were drafting. Stewart Global Media is handling the response."
Within two hours, the corporate legal machine of Emmett Stewart unleashed a counter-offensive that completely obliterated my family's narrative.
Instead of a defensive press release, Emmett’s team released a comprehensive public dossier to major financial networks, including The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. The package contained the verified, redacted timeline of Nicholas’s actual compliance violations, the formal cease-and-desist letter from Stewart Global, and a scathing personal statement from Emmett himself.
"Ms. Jenna Vance is the premier strategic communications architect of our firm," Emmett's public statement read. "The malicious attempts by third parties to exploit her professional stature for personal financial gain have been thoroughly documented and referred to the proper legal authorities. Stewart Global Media stands unequivocally behind Ms. Vance and her agency. Any further defamatory publications will face immediate, multi-million dollar litigation."

The effect was instantaneous. The society blog pulled the article within fifteen minutes, replacing it with a public apology to me and my firm. Nicholas's name was permanently cemented not just as a corporate failure, but as a public liability.
My mother called me ten times that afternoon, her voice on the voicemails hysterical as she realized that their attempt to shame me had backfired so spectacularly that it had sealed Nicholas's fate forever.
