Chapter 5 - The Parent's Intervention

By Thursday afternoon, the situation had escalated from a corporate dispute to a full-blown family emergency. My parents drove from their suburban home in Connecticut to Boston without inviting me, staging an unannounced intervention at my office building in the Financial District.

My agency, Vance Strategic Comms, operated out of a secure, private floor in a high-rise building. When the receptionist buzzed my inner office to inform me that Richard and Eleanor Vance were demanding to see me in the lobby, I took a deep breath, adjusted my blazer, and walked out to meet them.

My mother looked ten years older, her designer handbag clutched tightly against her stomach. My father stood with his arms crossed, his face darkened with an old, familiar anger.

"Jenna," my mother gasped the moment she saw me. "Thank goodness you're here. The security downstairs almost didn't let us up. Since when do you have security for a 'writing office'?"

"Since my clients started including Fortune 500 CEOs, Mom," I said, gesturing toward the glass-walled conference room. "Come inside. We shouldn't talk in the reception area."

Once the door was closed, my father didn't waste any time. He slammed a printed copy of the financial news article onto the glass table.

"Nicholas has been fired, Jenna," my father said, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "Terminated. Stripped of his equity options, blacklisted from every major brokerage firm in New England. They escorted him out of the building with a security guard this morning!"

I sat down at the head of the table, keeping my hands folded neatly. "I know. I read the compliance report."

"You know?" my mother cried, tears welling in her eyes. "Jenna, how can you be so callous? Your brother is ruined! He and Chloe just bought that luxury condo in Brookline. They can't afford the mortgage without his salary! Chloe’s parents are already talking about an annulment because of the public scandal!"

"Nicholas didn't just make a mistake, Mom," I explained calmly, maintaining my professional demeanor. "He committed corporate fraud. He fabricated an email trail claiming that I was using my position at Stewart Global to filter proprietary information to his firm. If Emmett hadn't been lenient enough to handle it through civil cease-and-desist channels, Nicholas would be facing federal indictment right now, not just unemployment."

My father blinked, the gravity of the word indictment finally penetrating his defensive shield. He looked around the luxury conference room, taking in the sleek Italian furniture, the advanced video-conferencing equipment, and the breathtaking view of the Boston harbor.

"How much do you make here, Jenna?" he asked suddenly, his voice hollow.

"That's none of your business, Dad," I replied.

"It is our business when your brother is starving while you're sitting in a sky-mansion!" he shouted. "You have Emmett Stewart's ear. You can call him right now. Tell him it was a sibling misunderstanding. Tell him to drop the compliance report and give Nicholas his reputation back!"

I looked at my parents, realizing that even now, confronted with the reality of my immense success, their only instinct was to cannibalize it to salvage their golden boy. They didn't say congratulations. They didn't say we're proud of you. They only saw me as an emergency fund for Nicholas's failures.

"I will do no such thing," I said, standing up to signal the end of the meeting. "Nicholas spent his entire life building a kingdom out of smoke and mirrors, treating everyone around him—especially me—like garbage. He finally ran into a reality he couldn't manipulate. I will not compromise my agency, my reputation, or my relationship with my clients to save him from the consequences of his own arrogance."

My mother stared at me, horrified. "You've changed, Jenna. You used to be so sweet, so compliant."

"No, Mom," I said, walking toward the door and holding it open for them. "I just stopped letting you define my worth by his shadow. My assistant will show you to the elevators."
