Chapter 10 - A Foundation Built on Love

One year later.
The morning sun blazed brightly across the Chicago skyline, reflecting like a brilliant golden mirror off the sleek, ultra-modern glass facade of the completed Mercer Tower.
At sixty stories tall, it stood as a marvel of modern architecture—a beacon of engineering excellence, complete with hanging sky-gardens, solar glass panels, and the strongest, purest reinforced core in the world, verified by Sarah Lin’s revolutionary bio-polymer process.
On the ground level, surrounded by lush green trees, fountains, and marble benches, was the public plaza.
Hundreds of people gathered around a large bronze monument standing at the center of the park. The sculpture depicted a massive concrete pipe, open to the sun, with a bronze little girl sitting at the edge, extending her hand toward a blooming rose growing from the gravel.
Inscribed on the granite base were simple words: “To those who listen in the silence, and to those brave enough to hold the light.”
Elena, now eight years old, stood beside the sculpture holding a big ribbon-cutting pair of scissors. She looked healthy, happy, her dark hair styled in twin braids, her laughter ringing out across the plaza.
Sarah stood behind her, her hand resting on Saurin’s arm. They looked like a true family—bound not by blood, but by shared trial, courage, and unconditional love.
"Are you ready, Elena?" Saurin asked, leaning down beside her.
"I'm ready, Uncle Saurin!" Elena cheered happily.
With a sharp snip, Elena cut the bright red ribbon spanning the entrance to the Mercer Tower Public Plaza. The crowd erupted into loud, joyful cheers, balloons floated up into the clear blue sky, and the plaza fountains erupted into majestic displays of water and light.
Saurin picked Elena up, setting her comfortably on his shoulder as they walked through the grand entrance of the tower alongside Sarah and Tessa.
As they stepped into the sunlit, bustling marble lobby—a place once destined to be a graveyard, now filled with life, warmth, and laughter—Saurin looked down at the little girl who had changed his life forever.
"You know, Elena," Saurin whispered gently as they watched the sunlight dance across the glass walls. "Finding you in that pipe was the best thing that ever happened to me."

Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tight. "I wasn't waiting for the men in the black trucks, Uncle Saurin. I was waiting for you."
Saurin held her close, walking forward into the bright, beautiful future they had built together.
