Chapter 9 - Justice Served
Three days later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by hundreds of journalists, activists, and citizens.
Senator Richard Vance was led up the stone steps in heavy wrist restraints and leg irons, surrounded by federal marshals. His face was hollow, his political career shattered, his name forever associated with one of the most disgraceful corporate corruption scandals in state history.
Miller and eleven senior operatives from Apex Security were processed alongside him, facing charges ranging from grand fraud and environmental pollution to attempted murder and kidnapping.
Inside the courthouse press room, Saurin Mercer stood behind a wooden podium surrounded by dozens of microphones.
Sitting in the front row, wearing a lovely blue dress purchased by Tessa, was Elena. Beside her sat Sarah, looking radiant, strong, and proud.
"Three days ago," Saurin spoke into the microphones, his voice echoing clearly across the room, "this city learned a painful truth about how corruption can hide beneath millions of tons of concrete. We learned that the very foundations meant to support our lives were built on lies."
He paused, looking down at Elena, offering her a soft, genuine smile.
"But we also learned that truth cannot be buried forever. Because a little girl, sitting in a concrete drainage pipe on a cold evening, had the courage to hold onto evidence that saved thousands of lives."
The press room erupted in applause. Cameras flashed continuously.

"Today," Saurin continued, holding up a legal document, "Mercer Holdings is officially establishing the Elena Lin Foundation for Environmental Safety. This foundation, directed by Chief Environmental Officer Sarah Lin, will have full legal authority to inspect, test, and certify every public and commercial construction site across the state."
He looked back at the cameras, his expression firm and unyielding. "And as for Mercer Tower... we are resuming construction tomorrow. But we aren't just building a tower anymore. We are building a symbol of what happens when a city chooses truth over greed."
