Chapter 4 - The Ambush

The heavy iron doors at the top of the stairwell slammed shut with a deafening metallic bang, followed by the electronic whine of magnetic deadbolts locking into place.

"The ventilation shaft!" Sarah gasped, pointing toward a wide, rectangular duct near the ceiling of the lab. "It leads to the old cooling canal behind the facility! It empties into the river!"

"Marcus, get Sarah up there!" Saurin commanded, stepping toward the heavy reinforced door as the sound of power saws began grinding against the steel frame from the outside.

Marcus boosted Sarah up, helping her crawl into the narrow galvanized metal duct. One of the security team members followed her to secure the exit route.

Before Saurin could climb up, a sharp explosion rocked the lab door. The hinges blew outward in a shower of sparks and hot shrapnel.

Miller stepped through the smoke, flanked by three heavily armed Apex guards carrying non-lethal shock batons and tactical sidearms.

"End of the line, Mercer," Miller sneered, raising his weapon. "Did you really think a billionaire with a savior complex could outsmart a political machine that has run this state for thirty years?"

Saurin stood straight, unbothered by the gun pointed at his chest. "I don't need to outsmart your machine, Miller. I just needed five minutes to transfer the blue envelope’s encrypted contents to the Federal Prosecutor’s cloud server."

Miller’s face darkened. "You lie."

"Check your phone," Saurin said coolly.

At that exact second, every phone on Miller’s team began chiming simultaneously with urgent high-priority emergency alerts.

Tessa, working from the surveillance van, had just released the unredacted chemical analysis, structural failure projections, and Senator Vance’s secret offshore bank records to every major news outlet, the Department of Justice, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

"You idiot!" Miller roared, aiming his weapon directly at Saurin’s head. "You just signed your own death warrant!"

Before Miller could pull the trigger, Marcus dropped down from the ceiling duct behind Miller’s men, throwing a blinding magnesium flashbang grenade onto the concrete floor.

A blinding white flash and an ear-splitting bang echoed through the room.

Saurin reacted instantly, tackling Miller to the floor and slamming the man’s gun hand against the hard concrete. The weapon skittered away into the darkness.

"Out! Now!" Marcus yelled through the smoke, grabbing Saurin’s shoulder and pulling him toward the open ventilation shaft.

Saurin hauled himself up into the duct just as Miller’s disoriented men began firing wildly into the haze. The metal walls groaned under their weight as they scrambled through the dark conduit, emerging into the cold, rain-slicked air of the cooling canal outside.

Sarah was waiting under the bridge, wrapped in a emergency blanket provided by the second bodyguard.

Saurin jumped down into the mud, wiping dirt and sweat from his forehead. He looked at Sarah and offered his hand.

"Come on," Saurin said, as the distant sound of police sirens began to echo across the city sky. "Let's take you home to your daughter."
