Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The hotel in the neighboring town of Millbrook was a world away from the dirt road in Georgia. Eli had cleared out the top floor, ensuring absolute privacy and security. Marcus had stationed two plainclothes guards at the entrances, creating an impenetrable fortress for Claire and her daughter.
Inside the suite, Lily was sitting on a plush velvet sofa, her eyes wide with wonder as she ate a bowl of fresh strawberries and cream brought up by room service. She had never seen a television so big, nor had she ever felt carpet so soft beneath her bare feet.
Claire sat at the dining table, wrapped in a plush robe the hotel had provided, sipping a cup of chamomile tea. The grime of the dirt road had been washed away, revealing the delicate, timeless elegance that Eli remembered so vividly.
Eli sat across from her, a glass of scotch in his hand, untouched.
"She looks like you," Eli said softly, breaking the silence as they watched Lily color in a book the hotel staff had brought up.
"She has my hair," Claire murmured, a soft smile appearing on her face before vanishing just as quickly. "But she has her father's eyes."
Eli felt a sharp, familiar pang in his chest. "Her father... where is he, Claire?"
Claire set her teacup down, the porcelain clicking softly against the saucer. She looked directly into Eli’s eyes, her expression unreadable. "He left before she was born. He didn't even know she existed."
Eli felt a sudden surge of anger toward this unknown man. How could anyone abandon Claire, especially when she was bearing a child? "He's a fool."
"Yes," Claire said quietly, her hazel eyes locking onto Eli's with a intensity that made him breath catch. "He was."
The weight of her words hung in the air between them, heavy and laden with unspoken truths. Eli opened his mouth to ask more, but before he could speak, his phone buzzed on the glass table.
It was Marcus. Eli picked it up. "Speak."
"Boss, we have a problem," Marcus’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. "Our investigators just pulled the deep digital archives for Shepard Enterprises. Vance didn't just frame Claire for embezzlement. The money wasn't stolen at all—it was transferred to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under a shell company. But here’s the kicker: the transfer was authorized using an administrative master key that only two people possessed."
"Old man Shepard and Vance," Eli deduced.
"Correct," Marcus said. "Vance used his father's key to steal the two hundred thousand to pay off a loan shark in Atlanta. But when Claire caught the discrepancy during her night audit, she printed a physical copy of the original transaction ledger before Vance could wipe the server."
Eli turned his head to look at Claire. "Claire, did you keep hard copies of the ledgers?"
Claire froze, her tea spoon hovering in mid-air. "I... I hid them. That night, when I saw what Vance had done, I knew he would try to pin it on me. I printed the raw system logs and hidden ledger entries. I hid them inside the old barn behind my father’s house before the Sheriff arrested me."
"Why didn't you give them to the police?" Eli asked.
"Because Sheriff Higgins was the one who helped Vance search my house!" Claire said, her voice rising in panic. "If I had told them about the papers, Vance would have destroyed them, and I would have gone to prison for life! I had to protect Lily. I was pregnant, Eli. I couldn't risk going to jail!"
"Where is that barn now?" Eli asked, standing up immediately.
"It’s on the old Shepard estate grounds," Claire said, horror dawning on her face. "The area Vance is planning to demolish tomorrow for his new plant."
Eli’s eyes narrowed. "He isn't building a plant. He knows those documents are still there. He’s going to flatten that barn to destroy the evidence before our lawyers can get a search warrant."
Eli turned to Marcus on the phone. "Marcus, gather the team. We’re going to that barn now."
"Eli, no!" Claire cried out, standing up and grabbing his arm. "Vance has armed guards out there! He knows he’s cornered. You can't go out there in the middle of the night!"
Eli looked down at her hands holding onto his sleeve. He gently placed his hand over hers. "Twenty-six years ago, I ran away because I was weak and poor, Claire. I spent the rest of my life making sure I would never be weak again. I am going to get those documents, and I am going to give you back your life."

"Please," she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "Don't leave me again."
"I’m coming back," Eli promised, kissing her forehead softly. "I swear it."
