Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Claire stared at the velvet box in Eli’s hand, her breath catching in her throat. The world seemed to stop moving around them—the autumn breeze suspended, the soft nickering of the horses in the distance fading into quiet background music.

Eli lowered himself onto one knee on the manicured green grass of their new lawn. He opened the box, revealing a stunning ring featuring an exquisite, vintage-cut hazel diamond surrounded by a halo of tiny white diamonds that sparkled brilliantly in the Georgia sun.

"Twenty-six years ago, I stood by the creek and promised you that I would go out into the world, become a man worthy of you, and come back to give you everything you deserved," Eli said, his voice filled with deep, resonant emotion. "I failed that promise for a long time, Claire. I thought 'everything' meant money, power, and prestige. But being away from you proved that none of those things mean anything if I can't share them with the woman who holds my soul."

Tears welled up in Claire’s hazel eyes, shining like liquid gold.

"I love you, Claire," Eli continued, reaching up to take her hand. "I loved you when we were eighteen and broke, I loved you when I was searching for you in every crowd, and I love you now. Will you do me the honor of making me the happiest, luckiest man alive? Will you marry me?"

Claire didn't hesitate for a single second. She dropped to her knees right in front of him in the soft grass, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into a passionate, joyous kiss.

"Yes!" she wept with delight, kissing his lips, his cheeks, his forehead. "Yes, Eli! A thousand times yes!"

Eli slipped the ring onto her finger, its fit absolute perfection. He lifted her up into his arms, spinning her around on the lawn as she laughed—a pure, golden sound that filled the entire valley.

Lily came galloping over on her horse, sliding off with Marcus's help and running over to join them, clapping her hands wildly. "Are we getting married? Are we a real family now?"

Eli dropped down, scooping Lily up with one arm and pulling Claire in with the other, holding both of his treasures tight against his heart.

"We were always a real family, sweetheart," Eli said, kissing Lily’s forehead. "Now we're just making sure the whole world knows it."
