Chapter 5 - Fire in the Night

The night was pitch black as Eli’s SUV cut through the winding back roads toward the Shepard estate. Rain had begun to fall—a heavy, tropical Georgia downpour that turned the red clay into a slick, treacherous soup.
Marcus drove with expert precision, while two other SUVs filled with Eli’s private security detail followed close behind.
"We have visual on the old barn, boss," Marcus said, looking through night-vision binoculars as they crested a hill overlooking the abandoned edge of the Shepard property. "There’s activity. Two pickup trucks and a bulldozer."
Eli looked through the window. In the distance, illuminated by the harsh yellow work lights of a heavy excavator, stood an old, weathered wooden barn. Vance Shepard was standing near the entrance, gesticulating wildly at a man in a yellow hardhat behind the controls of the bulldozer.
"He’s tearing it down tonight," Eli said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "He’s not waiting for morning."
"We need to move now," Marcus said, clicking off his safety. "If that bulldozer hits the main support beams, the whole structure collapses, and anything inside is lost."
"No guns unless fired upon," Eli commanded. "We take control of the site immediately."
The three SUVs roared down the hill, their high beams flashing through the blinding rain. They slid to a halt in a defensive ring around the bulldozer, cutting off its path to the barn.
Vance Shepard spun around, shielding his eyes from the blinding lights. When he recognized Eli stepping out of the lead vehicle, his face twisted in a mixture of fear and unbridled rage.
"Vance!" Eli bellowed over the roar of the rain and the diesel engine. "Turn off the equipment!"
"Get off my property, Vance!" Vance screamed back, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a heavy revolver. "I told you to stay out of this! This is my land, and I'll tear down whatever I damn well please!"
The moment the gun appeared, Marcus and six security guards drew their sidearms, aiming them squarely at Vance’s chest.
"Put the weapon down, Mr. Shepard!" Marcus ordered in a voice like thunder.
Vance’s hand shook violently. He was surrounded, outgunned, and exposed, but the madness of a desperate man had taken hold of him. "She took everything from me! She was just a nobody bookkeeper! My father was going to disinherit me because of her!"
"Your father was going to disinherit you because you were a thief and a gamble addict!" Eli shouted, stepping right into the line of fire, ignoring Marcus’s frantic warning. Eli walked straight toward Vance, his eyes fixed on the gun. "You stole the money, Vance. You framed Claire, you ruined her life, and you left a child to grow up in poverty. You're a coward."
"Shut up!" Vance shrieked, raising the revolver toward Eli’s chest. "I'll kill you! I'll burn this whole place to the ground!"
Before Vance could pull the trigger, Marcus moved with blinding speed. He lunged forward, grabbing Vance’s wrist and twisting it upward. A gunshot echoed through the night sky, bullet shattering the air above them, followed instantly by the sickening crunch of bone as Marcus disarmed Vance and slammed him face-first into the muddy clay.
The bulldozer operator threw his hands in the air, instantly cutting the engine.
Eli didn't even look at Vance groveling in the mud. He turned toward the dark, creaking entrance of the ancient barn.
"Marcus, secure him and call the State Police," Eli said coldly. "Not the local Sheriff. The State Troopers."
Eli pulled a heavy flashlight from the SUV and stepped into the pitch-black barn. The air inside smelled of dry hay, rot, and dust. He shone the beam around the rafters, searching for the spot Claire had described.
In the far corner, tucked beneath a false floorboard hidden under an old grain sack, Eli found a rusty metal lockbox. He used a crowbar from the SUV to pry it open.

Inside, wrapped in oilskin paper, was a thick stack of documents—the original signed ledgers, system printouts with digital timestamps, and an audio cassette tape labeled Vance - July 14.
Eli picked up the papers, holding the truth that would finally clear Claire’s name. As he walked out of the barn into the rain, he looked up at the clearing sky. The storm was beginning to pass, revealing a sliver of moonlight through the clouds.
