Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

While the corporate restructuring of Veritas Bio-Tech made global headlines over the weekend, a darker, more personal storm was brewing in the shadows outside the public eye.
On Sunday evening, I stood on the balcony of my penthouse apartment overlooking the glittering expanse of Manhattan. The snow had stopped, leaving the city blanketed in a crisp, quiet stillness.
My phone vibrated on the glass table beside me.
I picked it up. An encrypted text message from an unknown number:
He knows you’re coming for him next. The empire was just the surface, Maya. The old man is watching.
I stared at the screen, my expression hardening.
The "old man."
Marcus Caldwell—Victor’s reclusive, ruthless grandfather, the patriarch who had built the original family fortune during the ruthless industrial boom of the 1970s and 80s through methods that made Victor’s crimes look like petty theft. For years, rumor had it that Marcus Sr. had died in a private Swiss clinic, but my intelligence network—and the deep-dive files recovered from Victor’s encrypted servers—told a very different story.
He was alive. He was hiding in plain sight in a sprawling, heavily fortified estate in the Swiss Alps. And he was orchestrating a counter-strike.
The sliding glass door behind me opened softly, and Evelyn stepped out onto the balcony, wrapping a cashmere shawl around her shoulders.
"You're thinking about the grandfather, aren't you?" Evelyn asked quietly, reading my expression with the ease of someone who had known me through years of battle.
"Arthur Pendelton’s ledger had a secondary encryption layer," I said, not turning away from the city lights. "Every quarter, millions of dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency were siphoned out of Caldwell Global accounts and transferred to an encrypted wallet in Zurich. The recipient wasn't Victor. It was Marcus Sr."
Evelyn’s breath hitched in the cold night air. "Marcus Caldwell is dead to the world. If he’s still funding operations, what is he preparing for?"
"War," I said simply. "Victor was just the prince. The old man is the king. And he won't let a girl from the outside dismantle his family’s century-old legacy without a fight."
Before Evelyn could reply, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was an urgent alert from our security detail stationed at the Manhattan Neurological Institute, where Clara and Chloe were undergoing their physical therapy sessions.

My eyes narrowed. The old man hadn't waited. He had made his move.
