Chapter 7 - Breach at the Institute

The black SUVs pulled up outside the Manhattan Neurological Institute just as the clock struck midnight.

I stepped out of the lead vehicle into the freezing night air, followed by Marcus Marcus and a specialized security team. The glass doors of the institute’s lobby were shattered, shards sparkling like diamonds under the flashing blue lights of arriving police cruisers.

Inside, the lobby was empty, but the security monitors at the front desk told the terrifying story: four masked operatives in tactical gear had bypassed the ground-floor biometric scanners and were currently moving up the service stairwell toward the third-floor pediatric wing—where Clara and Chloe were resting under post-therapy observation.

"They aren't here for money," I said, unholstering a secure encrypted tablet that linked directly to the building’s smart-grid infrastructure. "They’re here to take the girls. Marcus Sr. wants leverage to force a settlement and reclaim the foundation assets."

"We need to cut them off before they reach the ward," Evelyn urged, jogging up behind us, her face pale with adrenaline.

"Already on it," I replied, my fingers flying across the tablet screen.

I bypassed the building's standard firewall, tapping directly into the automated environmental controls of the third floor. With a few swift commands, heavy electromagnetic security shutters—designed to protect rare medical specimens in the event of a biological hazard—slammed shut across every corridor leading to the pediatric wing, sealing the hallway into an airtight vault.

Through the security cameras, we watched the four tactical operatives slam their shoulders against the reinforced steel shutter, swearing in frustration as their comms buzzed with frantic orders from their handler in Zurich.

"They're trapped," Marcus Marcus noted, a grim smile touching his lips. "Federal marshals are securing the stairwells right now. There’s nowhere left for them to run."

Suddenly, one of the operatives dropped his rifle, reached into his tactical vest, and pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, holding it up directly toward the ceiling camera.

On the screen in the control room, an audio patch crackled to life. A gravelly, ancient, yet razor-sharp voice echoed through the speakers.

"Impressive, little girl," the voice of Marcus Caldwell Sr. rasped across the transatlantic frequency. "You managed to tear down my grandson's playpen. But you seem to forget—empires aren't built on glass and concrete. They are built on blood and fire. You think you've won because you hold the title deeds? I'll burn this entire city to the ground before I let a nobody take what the Caldwells built."

I stepped up to the camera console, pressing the audio transmission button so my voice echoed directly through the speaker in the third-floor corridor.

"Your empire was built on lies, Marcus," I said, my voice ice-cold, carrying across the ocean into the ear of the aging patriarch. "And the fire you’re threatening? It’s already consuming you. Your mercenaries are trapped, your accounts are frozen, and your legacy is officially dead."

There was a long, agonizing pause on the other end of the frequency.

Then, the sound of distant sirens grew deafeningly loud as federal tactical units swarmed the third-floor stairwell, shouting orders, their boots thundering against the floor.

On the monitor, the four masked operatives dropped their weapons, raised their hands, and knelt against the wall as federal agents swarmed around them.

The ghost of the Caldwell dynasty had finally been put to rest.
