Chapter 6 - The Broken Barrier

The doors to the private penthouse suite clicked shut, sealing out the noise and chaos of the gala below.

I was shaking violently—a mix of lingering adrenaline, embarrassment, and anger. I pulled away from Alexander, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the twinkling city lights of San Antonio.

"I told you," I said, my voice cracking with emotion. "I told you I would bring ruin to your reputation. Sophia was right. Look at what they're saying! They think I'm a gold-digger who seduces rich men for money!"

"Let them think whatever they damn well please!" Alexander roared, stepping up behind me. It was the first time I had ever heard him lose his cool, his usual stoic composure completely shattered.

I turned around to face him, tears stinging my eyes. "How can you say that? You have a multi-billion-dollar merger tomorrow! Julian is using me to destroy your credibility with the board! If you fire Sophia and fight Julian over me, you could lose control of Carter Enterprises!"

"Then let it burn!" Alexander shouted, taking two fast steps toward me until he was mere inches away.

I gasped, startled by his sudden outburst.

Alexander grabbed my hands, holding them tightly against his chest. I could feel the thunderous beat of his heart through his tuxedo jacket.

"Do you really think I care about a corporate merger more than I care about you?" Alexander demanded, his voice dropping from a roar into a raw, desperate whisper. "I built this empire, Emily. I can build another one. But in thirty-eight years of life, I have never met a woman like you. You came into my life when I was cold, cynical, and surrounded by vultures who only wanted a piece of my wealth."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, burning down my cheeks.

"You cared for my mother when you had nothing," Alexander continued, his thumb gently wiping away my tears. "You looked at me not as a billionaire, but as a man burdened by his own world. You brought light back into this family. If losing this company is the price I have to pay to keep you safe, I will pay it a thousand times over."

"Alexander..." I whispered, my heart aching with an overwhelming emotion I could no longer deny.

"I love you, Emily," he confessed softly, his dark eyes vulnerable and wide open, stripped of all defenses. "I've loved you since the moment I saw you kneeling beside my mother in that little café."

Before I could speak, Alexander leaned down and captured my lips with his.

The kiss was fierce, passionate, and filled with months of unspoken longing. All the fear, the doubt, the chaos outside the room melted away. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the warmth and safety of his embrace.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, both of us were breathless.

"I love you too, Alexander," I admitted, staring into his eyes. "I was just so terrified of ruining your life."

"You didn't ruin my life, Emily," he murmured, kissing my forehead softly. "You saved it."

Suddenly, his phone buzzed violently on the table behind us.

Alexander answered it, keeping one arm wrapped securely around my waist. "Speak, Victoria."

Victoria’s voice on the speaker sounded frantic, stripped of her usual corporate calm. "Alexander, we have a code red. Julian just left the hotel with your mother."

Alexander’s body went completely rigid. "What did you say?"

May you like

"Julian convinced Eleanor that there was an emergency at the main estate regarding her medical trust," Victoria reported, her voice shaking. "He loaded her into his car and drove off toward the rural estate in Hill Country. He’s planning to force her to sign the guardianship papers tonight before the board meeting tomorrow morning!"

Alexander’s eyes turned pitch black with fury. "Get my car. Now."
