Chapter 7 - Race Against Time

The rain began to pour in heavy, blinding sheets as Alexander’s high-performance SUV tore down the dark, winding roads of Texas Hill Country. Thunder rattled the windows, and lightning illuminated the dense pine trees lining the highway.
Alexander kept his hands gripped tightly on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. I sat in the passenger seat, frantically trying to call Eleanor's personal cell phone, but it went straight to voicemail every single time.
"He took her phone," I said, panic rising in my throat. "Alexander, Eleanor is frail. If he stresses her out, her blood pressure could spike. It could trigger a stroke!"
"Julian has pushed this too far," Alexander said, his voice deadly quiet. "He thinks because the Hill Country estate is isolated, he can corner her without me interfering. He doesn't know Victoria turned on him."
Earlier, right before we left the hotel, Victoria Vance had approached us in tears. Devastated by her sister Sophia's firing and terrified of Julian’s increasingly illegal tactics, Victoria had confessed everything: Julian had hired a corrupt notary public to meet them at the secluded cabin to forge and force Eleanor’s signature on the conservatorship documents.
"If we get those papers," I realized, "we can prove coercion and fraud. We can end Julian’s threat forever."
"First, we make sure my mother is safe," Alexander said, pressing his foot down harder on the accelerator.
Twenty minutes later, the SUV turned down a secluded gravel road, stopping in front of an old, grand stone lodge surrounded by towering trees. The lights inside were on, casting warm yellow rectangles onto the wet grass.
Alexander didn't wait. He threw open his door and marched straight toward the front entrance. I followed close behind, holding my breath.
Instead of knocking, Alexander kicked the heavy oak door open with a deafening crash.
Inside the sprawling rustic living room, Julian stood near a stone fireplace, holding a thick stack of legal documents. Sitting in an armchair was Eleanor, looking pale, exhausted, but defiantly refusing to hold a pen offered to her by a nervous-looking man in a suit—the corrupt notary.
"Alexander!" Julian gasped, dropping the pen he was holding as we burst into the room.
"Get away from my mother," Alexander growled, taking powerful strides across the room.
Julian backed up against the fireplace, panic flashing in his eyes before he tried to regain his composure. "Alexander, stay back! I am doing this for the good of the family! Aunt Eleanor is incompetent! She’s giving away her wealth to waitresses and strangers!"
"I am completely in my right mind, Julian!" Eleanor’s voice echoed across the room, sharp and fierce despite her physical weakness. She stood up from her chair, using her cane to steady herself. "The only incompetent person in this family is you—a man so consumed by greed that he would kidnap his own aunt in the middle of a storm!"
"You signed the trust amendments!" Julian shouted, waving the papers frantically. "It's already done!"
"She hasn't signed anything," I spoke up, stepping forward and pointing at the notary, who was already visibly trembling with fear. "And that notary knows that if he stamps a document signed under distress, he’s going to prison for fraud and elder abuse."
The notary immediately threw his stamp onto the table. "I'm out! I was told she was willing! I'm not going to jail for you, Julian!" The man grabbed his briefcase and bolted out the open front door into the rain.
"You coward!" Julian screamed after him.
Alexander stepped directly into Julian’s space, grabbing him by the lapels of his suit jacket and hoisting him off his feet, slamming him against the stone mantle of the fireplace.
"It's over, Julian," Alexander whispered, his voice vibrating with pure rage. "I have Victoria's full confession. I have the security footage of you removing my mother from the hotel under false pretenses. By morning, you won't just be removed from the board of Carter Enterprises... you will be in handcuffs."
Julian’s face went pale. The arrogance, the smugness, the greed that had defined him completely collapsed, leaving behind a terrified, desperate man.
"Alex... please... we're family," Julian begged, his voice squeaking.
"Family doesn't terrorize an ill mother," Alexander said coldly, shoving Julian away. "Get out of my sight before I forget my own strength."
Julian stumbled, gathered his coat, and fled into the storming night like a beaten dog.
The moment he was gone, Eleanor sank back into her armchair, let out a long sigh, and closed her eyes. I rushed to her side instantly, kneeling on the rug and taking her trembling hands into mine.
"Eleanor! Are you okay? Do you need your medication?" I asked urgently.
Eleanor opened her eyes, looking down at me with profound affection. She lifted a hand, gently resting it against my cheek.

"I am wonderful, my sweet Emily," Eleanor whispered, a tear of relief escaping her eye. "Because my family is finally whole."
Alexander knelt beside me, wrapping his arms around both of us as the storm roared outside, sealing our bond in the quiet warmth of the lodge.
