Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, washing San Antonio in bright, golden sunlight.
At 10:00 AM, the glass-and-steel boardroom on the 45th floor of Carter Tower was packed to capacity. The entire Board of Directors, high-ranking executives, and legal representatives sat around the massive oval table.
Julian sat near the end of the table, flanked by two corporate lawyers. He looked disheveled, dark circles under his bloodshot eyes, desperately whispering to his counsel.
When the heavy double doors opened, Alexander walked in. He was wearing an unblemished dark suit, power emanating from every step. Beside him walked Eleanor, stepping proudly with her mahogany cane, and directly behind them was me, accompanied by Victoria Vance and two high-ranking detectives from the San Antonio Police Department.
A gasp echoed through the room.
Alexander took his seat at the head of the table, while Eleanor sat to his right. I stood quietly near the window, feeling no longer like a nervous waitress, but like a woman who knew exactly where she belonged.
"This emergency board meeting is called to order," Alexander announced, his voice booming clearly across the silence. "Before we vote on the Vanguard merger, there is an urgent matter regarding corporate governance and board integrity that must be addressed."
Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back. "This is absurd! Alexander is bringing non-board members—and police officers—into an executive meeting to intimidate us!"
"Sit down, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice commanding the entire room.
The board members looked at Eleanor in shock. For months, Julian had leaked rumors that Eleanor was bedridden, silent, and mentally incapacitated. Seeing her stand up, lucid, dignified, and furious, instantly shattered Julian’s narrative.
"Members of the board," Eleanor began, looking around the table at men and women she had known for decades. "My nephew, Julian, has spent the last month attempting to usurp my voting rights, spying on my personal life, and last night, he abducted me to a cabin in Hill Country to force my signature on illegal conservatorship papers."
The board members began whispering frantically among themselves, looking at Julian with disgust.
"That's a lie! She's confused!" Julian yelled, pointing a finger at me. "It's that girl! Emily! She's brainwashed my aunt and Alexander!"
Victoria Vance stood up. She stepped forward, placing a thick dossier and a USB flash drive in the center of the boardroom table.
"As Chief of Staff, I am submitting recorded audio, financial paper trails, and text messages proving that Julian Carter attempted to bribe medical personnel, forged corporate documents, and engaged in extortion," Victoria said firmly, looking Julian dead in the eye. "I have provided full statements to the police officers standing in this room."
Julian froze. His lawyers looked at the evidence, looked at the police officers, and slowly slid away from Julian, packing up their briefcases.
"Counsel?" Julian panicked, looking at his lawyers. "Do something!"
"Julian Carter," one of the lead police officers stepped forward, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted extortion, elder abuse, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, the entire boardroom fell completely silent. Julian looked at Alexander, his eyes filled with desperate panic. "Alex! Please! Tell them to stop! Don't do this to family!"
Alexander looked at his cousin with cold, unyielding eyes. "You stopped being my family the moment you targeted my mother and the woman I love. Take him away."
The police led a sobbing, ruined Julian out of the boardroom.
Once the doors closed, Alexander stood up and looked at the remaining board members.

"Now," Alexander said calmly, leaning over the table. "Let's vote on the merger."
Unanimously, every single hand around the table went up in favor of Alexander’s leadership.
